John Watson ("Ian Maclaren")
John Watson was born in Manningtree, Essex, on 3 November 1850, and is remembered (under his pseudonym "Ian Maclaren") as a leading member of the notorious "Kailyard" school of Scottish writers. Watson's family moved to Perth in 1854, and he was educated at Stirling High School, Edinburgh University, and New College, Edinburgh, where he trained for the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland. He worked in Logiealmond (Perthshire) from 1873 to 1877, then in Glasgow for three years. He was minister in Sefton Park, Liverpool, from 1880 until 1895, where he played a prominent part in the establishment of University College, later the University of Liverpool. He was also President of the National Free Church Council, and was involved in the foundation of Westminster College, Cambridge. Under his own name Watson mainly wrote religious books, but as "Ian Maclaren" he became famous with "Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush" (1894), a loose collection of rural "idylls" set in the fictional village of Drumtochty, which is probably based on Logiealmond. Church affairs are at the centre of village life, and pious deathbed scenes abound. The book's sentimentality proved highly popular, and other books followed in the same vein. In a review of Maclaren, J. M. Barrie
