Fine Arts' Finest
CONCERT SHOW CASES STUDENTS
Fine Arts' Finest, an annual celebration of scholarship donors and their recipients, was held January 23 in Keller Hall. By showcasing students in action, the College of Fine Arts can easily demonstrate how scholarship funds are used. Participation included representatives from almost every discipline/department. Michaela Koerner, a music and theatre double major, is the Ana Chavira Memorial Award recipient. She sang classical and musical theater pieces. Susan Erickson, master of fine arts candidate in dramatic writing, is a Thelma and Edmund Evans scholarship recipient who wrote a one-act play performed by tow other theatre students. Aaron Fry, a doctoral candidate in art history, received the Henry Luce Scholarship for Doctoral Dissertation Candidates Stydying American Art. He discussed his dissertation subject, " The Kiowa Five," Native american painters of Oklahoma.
Dance major Jessica Jahner has Daniel Blumenfeld and Friends of Dance scholarships. She choreographed and performed a piece that evoked her flamenco and modern dance training. Rounding out the evening was a Brahms movement from the Abe Franck String Quartet, made up of music students Mabio Duarte, Mariusz Kozak, James Harvey and Ben Vickers.
Celebrating our students and the people who help them through generous scholarship donations was a treat. To find out more about making a scholarship gift, please call Sara McClure at (505) 277-7320, or send her an e-mail at

Gelato Italiano / Italian Ice Cream
Le Ricette Di Gelato Del Grandma Sono Squisite! The following Italian gelato recipes are taken from "The Italian Cook Book: The Art of Eating Well" by Mrs. Maria Gentile, published by Italian Book Co., New York, in 1919. Pistachio Ice Cream (Gelato di pistacchi) [If you love pistachio nuts, you will love this creamy, rich-tasting Italian dessert recipe. It should work well with other nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, or walnuts too.]
Milk, one quart; sugar, six ounces; pistachios, two ounces. Skin the pistachios in warm water and grind them very fine with a tablespoonful of the sugar, then put in a saucepan with [3 or 4] yolks and the sugar, mixing everything together. Add the milk and put the mixture on the fire stirring with the ladle, and when it is condensed like cream, let it cool and put in the freezer.

Spoons of his manufacture are still in possession of some families. Mr. Andrew Hyster came here about that time, continuing until his death, 1872. Since, his son, Geo. T. Eyster, has continued. Others have dropped in with a small stock of jewelry; the lack of patronage prevented their permanent stay, therefore Mr. Eyster remains at the old stand. o. 19. Clear Soup
Ingredients: Stock meat, water, a bunch of herbs (thyme, parsley, chervil, bay leaf, basil, marjoram), three carrots, three turnips, three onions, three cloves stuck in the onions, one blade of mace. Cut up three pounds of stock meat small and put it in a stock pot with two quarts of cold water, three carrots, and three turnips cut up, three onions with a clove stuck in each one, a bunch of herbs and a blade of mace. Let it come to the boil and then draw it off, at once skim off all the scum, and keep it gently simmering, and occasionally add two or three tablespoonsful of cold water. Let it simmer all day, and then strain it through a fine cloth. Some of the liquor in which a calf's head has been cooked, or even a calf's foot, will greatly improve a clear soup. The stock should never be allowed to boil as long as the meat and vegetables are in the stock pot.

Alfred Parke HAMILTON
d. 9 Apr 1933
The Ilford Guardian, Friday April 14, 1933 DEATH OF COUNCILLOR A.P. HAMILTON. HIS GREAT SERVICES TO ILFORD. As Police Inspector and Councillor. A Courageous Figure. It is with profound regret that we have to record the death, which occurred after a short illness at his residence, "Larigan", 15, Coventry Road, Ilford, on Sunday, at the age of 67, of Councillor Alfred Parke Hamilton. His last illness was of comparatively short duration. His absence through ill-health was mentioned at the last meeting of the Borough Council, when a message was sent by his colleagues wishing him a speedy recovery. There was little indication then that the indisposition was of anything but a temporary character. He was suffering from influenza. Pneumonia supervened, however, and despite devoted attention, the end came on Sunday morning. The news came as a great shock in the town which he had served so long in his two capacities, first as the Sub-Divisional Inspector of the "K" Division Metropolitan Police, and latterly as a member of the Borough Council. Fearless Outspokenness.

GARLICK AND POWELL FAMILY MEMBERS. WINFIELD CONNECTION. [ALSO INCLUDED: MAJ. AND MRS. A. H. THOMPSON.] MAJ. A. H. THOMPSON. Winfield Courier, April 25, 1878. Maj. A. H. Thompson, member of the Powell exploring expedition, was in this city last week, direct from the canyons of the Colorado. He was looking for a location to go into the sheep business when he gets through with his government scientific surveys. He likes this county better than any other he has seen and will probably locate here. MAJOR J. W. POWELL. Winfield Courier, October 19, 1882. Major J. W. Powell, of the U. S. Survey and topographical engineers, made us a call on Saturday. He is the officer who explored the great Colorado Canon and is the most energetic, capable, and scientific officer of the government surveys. His description of his work and geological researches are among the best in the government records, and are read by scientists with great interest. He came to Winfield to purchase a house and lots for his sister, Mrs. Eliza D. Garlick, for a residence and a Kindergarten school. As soon as she can arrange matters, she will become a permanent resident here and will introduce the kind of school for children so famous as the best, most pleasing, and effective. Winfield will receive her with cordial enthusiasm. Winfield Courier

Our Womack Family Association is six months old and we think it has been a success, so far. The first issue of our magazine, WOMACK GENEALOGY, was published in June and many complimentary letters have been received. We of the Staff would be considered ungrateful if we did not mention these as well as the many family records which have been contributed by various members of the Association. Each and every kind word and each and every contribution is very much appreciated. Other members of the Womack Family Association are urged to send us copies or their family histories and genealogies, for only in this way can we share our family data, trace lines of descent and correct errors, etc. Valuable family papers which are loaned to us are handled with care, copied quickly and returned promptly. Those who send typed copies are requested to send three copies (an original and two carbons) so that the widely scattered members of the Staff will have quick and easy access to the data.

Part 6 MILFORD LOCATION AND NATURAL FEATURES. The village of Milford is situated on a high, commanding plain inclining to the east and bordered by the high banks of the Big Blue River on the north. The first authentic knowledge of this lovely site was given by some early hunters, who found it occupied by about 5,000 Indians, comprising the Pawnees, Otoes and Omahas, who had rendezvoused here when resisting the whites' encroachment of the Sioux territory. Traditional history makes it a favorite camping-ground of the Pawnees and a rendezvous of the Pawnees, Otoes and Omahas when joining their united bands to defeat and protect themselves from the inroads of their bitter enemies, the murderous Sioux. A gigantic oak standing alone on the prairie near the bluffs is pointed out as the traditional "council tree," where many a compact has been sealed for exterminating the white man and saving the lives of their squaws and papooses.
