In DeWitt Colony land records he is listed as arriving married with a family of 25 on 26 Feb 1830 and receiving title on 5 May 1831. Survey records do not appear and records indicate the title or grant along with that of Caleb Brock was "set aside by decree of court in 1843." The large number listed as family likely include servants although the number may in some way been related to the land contract to bring families to the DeWitt Colony. It had the only bank in the county and the only newspaper and its citizens had ambitious plans for the first railroad - the La Grange to Memphis. Church Founder The Presbyterian Church was founded by Reverend Samuel McCulloch Williamson, a surprising fact since he was from an extensive and well-known Methodist family. In order of their service, some of the other men involved with the first church were Stephen K. Sneed, Richard Watkins, Reverend John H. Gray, Reverend John N. Waddel, Philip Doddridge Ewell, Robert H. Shepperd, Reverend Angus Johnson and Reverend William S. Cochrane. The deed for the church's first location has not been found. There were two known locations: Lot 102 and the southeast corner of Lot 11. HARD BLOWS IN THE 1840s Reverend Samuel M. Williamson: Founder, died at age 42 in 1846 and was buried in the La Grange Cemetery. He was born 1804 in Northampton County, North Carolina. He was married twice. His first wife was Mary R. Chapman, daughter of Robert H. Chapman, D.D. Dr. Alexander Augustus Campbell performed their marriage ceremony in Covington in 1832. Samuel M. Williamson, the second son of Benjamin and Mary (McCulloch) Williamson, was graduated from Yale in 1823, admitted to the bar in 1825 and moved to Tennessee and commenced practice with John Grundy. After entering the ministry, he supplied the Presbyterian Church in Memphis from November 1830 to November 1833 and was one of the most able ministers to preach in Memphis. He came to the Western District Presbytery from Shiloh Presbytery in 1831.

In the autumn of 1867, Dr. Jardine was appointed professor of rhetoric and mental and moral philosophy in the University of New Brunswick, which position he held for two years. In the summer of 1869 he went to Scotland for his holidays, and during a walking tour in the Highlands, fell in with the Rev. Dr. Norman Macleod, of Glasgow, who had lately returned from India. By him he was induced to go as a missionary to India, and was appointed principal of the General Assembly's institution in Bombay, with instructions to add a college department if possible. The sailing ship ‘Janet Mitchell’ months out of Glasgow was nearing the wharf at Port Phillip. John Maltman They were not long finding the reason. It spread through the ship like fire through dry grass. Gold had been discovered about 100 miles from Melbourne . Men from all walks of like shouldered a swag, pick and shovel and wash pan. The bush track to Ballarat was crammed with men in carts, on horseback and on foot, all lured on in the bitter cold to ‘El Dorado’. Very soon John Maltman was among them. This young man was more used to handling a pestle and mortar than a dolly, but he soon won some gold dust with aching limbs, blistered hands and shining eyes. It took all his gold to buy necessities of life that were offered for sale at exorbitant prices by ‘get rich quick’ traders who followed the camps. Knowing more about pills than rocks, he just managed to keep himself. Throughout life, gold always had a strong fascination for him but it never yielded him any financial gain.

Views in New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land, Australian Scrap Book . The eight views were all of New South Wales subjects. At the end of December 1831 he left England as draughtsman on the Beagle , which was making a surveying voyage with Darwin as its naturalist. Earle's health became so bad that he was unable to remain on board after August 1832. His place was taken by Conrad Martens (q.v.). Earle stayed at Monte Video for some months and then returned to England. He had two pictures in the 1837 Academy and one in the 1838 exhibition. His A Narrative of a Nine Months' Residence in New Zealand had been published in London in 1832 and in 1838 appeared Sketches Illustrative of the Native Inhabitants and Islands of New Zealand . Earle died between 1838 and 1840. There is a portrait by him of Captain John Piper (q.v.) at the Mitchell library.
