It is fortunate that each generation does not comprehend its own ignorance. We are thus enabled to call our ancestors barbarous. There is no such thing as absolute value in this world. You can only estimate what a thing is worth to you. A great artist can paint a great picture on a small canvas. Politics makes strange bed-fellows.

Too nearsighted to go to war, he became editor of the "Evening Press" in Hartford, CT, in 1861. Warner wrote a series of humorous essays about his farm, which Henry Ward Beecher had published as a book, "My Summer in a Garden" (1871), and which made Warner famous. He published nine books of essays and eight travel books about Europe and the American West. In 1873 Warner collaborated with his friend Mark Twain on "The Gilded Age."
