August 20, 1996: Zenon posts NOTs to alt.religion.scientology
While the affair in the Netherlands was heating up, a new wild card was suddenly added to make things even more confusing. Apparently from out of nowhere, a person in Sweden by the name of Zenon Panoussis oracle@dodo.pp.se ) re-posted the NOTs documents to alt.religion.scientology yet again, on August 20. Not only did he post NOTs to alt.religion.scientology, he also announced his intention to sell copies of the OT levels to anyone who asked for them. In addition to this re-post, Zenon posted his manifesto This, of course, prompted an immediate response from Scientology. Zenon's postings were promptly cancelled ...but immediately afterwards, Zenon re-posted NOTs again. He also declared that repeated cancellation of his posts would result in NOTs being re-posted ad nausaeum. email warning to Zenon on August 26, and a second warning on August 31. Here is his reply.

FAQ: How do I choose a good password or phrase?
ANS: Shocking nonsense makes the most sense With the intrinsic strength of some of the modern encryption, authentication, and message digest algorithms such as RSA, MD5, SHS and IDEA the user password or phrase is becoming more and more the focus of vulnerability. For example, Deputy Ponder with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department admitted in early 1993 that both they and the FBI despaired of breaking the PGP 1.0 system except through a successful dictionary attack (trying many possible passwords or phrases from lists of probable choices and their variations) rather than "breaking" the underlying cryptographic algorithm mathematically. The fundamental reason why attacking or trying to guess the user's password or phrase will increasingly be the focus of cryptanalysis is that the user's choice of password may represent a much simpler cryptographic key than optimal for the encryption algorithm being used. This weakness of the user's password choice provides the potential cryptanalytic wedge.

A note discussing the prevention of electromagnetic eavesdropping of personal computers.
Grady Ward (grady@netcom.com) public key verification by PK server, finger, or by request
Version 1.0 22 March 93 TEMPEST is the code name for technology related to limiting unwanted electromagnetic emissions from data processing and related equipment. Its goal is to limit an opponent's capability to collect information about the internal data flow of computer equipment. Most information concerning TEMPEST specifications is classified by the United States Government and is not available for use by its citizens. The reason why TEMPEST technology is particularly important for computers and other data processing equipment is the kinds of signals components in a computer use to talk to each other ("square waves") and their clock speeds (measured in megahertz) produce a particularly rich set of unintentional signals in a wide portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Because the spurious emissions occupy so wide a portion of that spectrum, technologies used to block one portion of the spectrum (as pulling the shades closed on a window to stop the visible light portion) are not necessarily effective in another portion. Unintentional emissions from a computer system can be captured and processed to reveal information about the target systems from simple levels of activity to even remotely copying keystrokes or capturing monitor information. It is speculated that poorly protected systems can be effectively monitored up to the order of one kilometer from the target equipment.

The Church of Scientology is a religious cult which has unwisely decided to declare war against the Usenet and Internet communities. Since December of 1994, this Church and its followers have committed numerous acts that are hostile to the spirit of free speech on the Net. This web page is intended to document these activities.

In the USA, RTC has sued and carries a process against a certain Grady Ward , with allegations that he violates the American equivalent to the law on protection of trade secrets. RTC has made its case against Grady Ward relevant in the abovementioned cases through its file attachement 9 in case T 7-866-96. RTC's case against Grady Ward stands or falls with the question whether the NOTs have been made public or not. The material whose reproduction and/or distribution through me constitutes the core and ground of all the above cases, appears in file attachement 37 in case T 7-866-96. The greatest part of this material, namely (my) NOTs, are reproduced in the primary court's file with protocol number ADM 1.14.6/96. Grady Ward has received a copy of the latter document and filed it in the American court as evidence of the fact that the NOTs have been publicized. The copy that Grady Ward handed in to the court is bound with security string and is attested by the registrar of the administrative section of the primary court of Stockholm. RTC and its representatives live perhaps in the naive belief that the RTC's counterparts cannot communicate with each-other, and that the RTC can both eat the cake and have it by presenting mutually contradicting claims in different cases. Fortunately this is not accurate, and the RTC has to choose between giving up its suit against Grady Ward or giving up its suit against me.

In the William and Clara Redmond Gardens, The Redmonds, Warren, McLarty, and Davis are among the twenty-five individuals and two groups of benefactors (Oxford graduates and members of the Class of 1968) who are honored with named rooms or sections of the Miller-Ward Alumni House. In all, about seven hundred donors contributed to the building project, according to Jack Gilbert, associate vice president for institutional advancement. The place is clearly a celebration of all things Emory. A quick tour is a difficult task: the walls are lined with beckoning photos of anonymous students and prominent alumni.

72. Saving Babies Goal Of Donna Carson's Project Prevent
When we started, 35 percent of babies at Grady tested positive for drugs; babies often stay for extended periods of time in the neonatal Ward at Grady.

Emory Report Feb. 1, 1999 Volume 51, No. 18
Saving babies goal of Donna Carson's Project Prevent "This is what we call the 'angel room,'" Donna Carson said as she walked into a lavender-hued corner room of Project Prevent's headquarters on Juniper Street in Midtown. Just below its ceiling, the room is bordered with angels hovering above a crib, bassinet, rocking chair and automatic swing. Elsewhere in the two-story house is the "fish room," along with one or two others that await proper names to suit their bright, freshly painted motifs. Each of these rooms also await future tenants: tiny residents, often weighing no more than a few pounds, to whom the value of these rooms cannot possibly be measured. Project Prevent is Emory's best-kept secret. Carson, its founder, has spent 22 years as a social worker and faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics, 15 as the sole social worker in Grady Hospital's neonatal intensive care nursery. In 1983 she founded the "Grady Rockers" program, using volunteers to provide the human touch and stimulation babies in the ward might not otherwise receive. But in 1990 Carson realized the problems these babies face had escalated. "Drugs had started to affect babies," she said. "Drug-addicted mothers would not get any prenatal care, would use drugs throughout their pregnancies and would walk in and deliver a baby that was one pound. We would do everything medically to save the child's life, spend a half-million dollars on the baby, only to have a mother who wasn't able to provide care for the baby."

Grady Ward was deposed by cult attorneys this week. He was questioned for about 10 hours concerning items such as his computer equipment, his educational background and was confronted with numerous postings which he allegedly posted. Grady recorded the entire proceedings on his notebook computer. the RealAudio files can be found at his web site http://www.northcoast.com/~grady/Welcome.html Shelley Thomson posted quotes from Grady before the deposition. He had conversations with cult attorneys concerning the examination of his scanners and shredders. They also discussed the answers Grady provided to the requests for documents, "None". "They decided at the last minute not to fly up when they realized most of the responses were 'none' and the only material I have is indices from free_agent newsreader and other rather random stuff. "Hogan wouldn't take the answers as I had written them. "He would say questions that assumed facts not in evidence such as 'Are you saying that you got rid of the OT documents so that you don't have them now?' or 'What exactly was your response after you posted the OTIII documents?'

Grady Ward had a preliminary hearing this week. Grady is accused by the cult of being the author of the Scamizdat series of anonymous posts containing confidential processing levels. Shelley Thomson reported the proceedings in her Biased Journalism newsletter. "Thomas R. Hogan undertook to speak for the plaintiffs. Grady Ward presented himself pro se. He wore a tweed sport jacket and a red tie, the type of thing a country businessman might wear; this contrasted sharply with the smoothly tailored RTC lawyers, who seemed to have bought their gear at Spare No Expense, Inc. "Judge Whyte asks if he has any connection to SCAMIZDAT. Grady Ward firmly denies that he is behind SCAMIZDAT. 'Do you know who is doing it?' the Judge asks. 'No, I do not,' Grady replies. "A discussion of the TRO ensues. Grady does not mind being enjoined from doing things he had not planned to do anyway, but he is unsure of the scope of the proposed order.
