Our price: List price: that's NaN% off! Sales rank: 1498786 Average customer rating: Reads like fiction Master of Villainy was an entertaining biography of Sax Rohmer, the serial author whose most famous creation is the fictional crime lord Fu Manchu. Van Ash began his writing career under the tutilage of Sax Rohmer, who coached him in tweaking his stories and submitting them. This puts Van Ash in a unique perspective to write a biograhy of Rohmer. (Rohmer's widow Elizabeth collaborated on the project, which always helps.) This background contributes to the biography very nicely. Van Ash, like Rohmer, was a serial author, so the facts presented here are described and paced for maximum entertainment value. Instead of beginning with a description of Sax being born and a sketch of his childhood Van Ash starts by describing a night on which Sax went missing in London's Chinatown and Elizabeth went to look for him. As Van Ash says he uses the character Fu Manchu to introduce the author rather than vice versa. The conventional biographical facts presented here string together anecdotes regarding Sax's life that highlight mysterious events and eccentricities in Sax and his aquaintances. This makes for a very entertaining read.

Sax Rohmer (1883-1959)
Sax Rohmer, aka British journalist Arthur Sarsfield Ward, invented literature's most devillish arch-fiend when he introduced the deliciously sinister Dr. Fu-Manchu in 1912. What's more, when nearing the age of 70 he even exposed our unsuspecting world to a female counterpart of the devil doctor. Sumuru appeared in 1950, and forever after scholars have debated which is the more tasteful title: The English edition "The Sins of Sumuru" or the American "Nude in Mink". You can't but admire a pensioner that can think up titles like that! Our own effort, the upcoming WHIO episode named "The Insidious Cheese" - although bold - somehow falls a little short. But in due time, we will get it right. Then it's our turn to autograph books wrapped in silk dressing robes, unlit pipes thrust firmly between our stiff upper lips! So there!
After being out of print for far too long, Fu-Manchu is now back. Here's the three first novels:
The Insidious Dr. Fu-Manchu

Authors of the Golden Age
  • G. K. Chesterton - (1874 - 1936) The creator of Father Brown. Chesterton was an artist, poet, journalist, critic, essayist, novelist, and short story writer. Chesterton was born in London, and wrote for various newspapers and magazine. Chesterton's other detective stories included The Club of Queer Trades and The Man Who Knew Too Much
    E. C. Bentley
    - (1875 - 1956) Author of Trent's Last Case (1913) which is possibly the first modern detective novel. Bentley meant the book to be a parody of the exploits of detectives like Holmes. Instead, he introduced a more human detective who was capable of making mistakes. He also added genuine characterization and a little humor to the novel. Bentley was born in London and educated at St. Paul's School where he met G.K. Chesterton who became his closest friend. Bentley attended Oxford, and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in London in 1902. Bentley changed his career from law to journalism, and was a journalist for 30 years.
    Mary Roberts Rinehart
(1876-1958) - a prolific American writer of mystery stories. She is also credited with originating the "Had I But Known" form of mystery novels in which the heroine is always getting into dangerous situations. Ms. Rinehart was born in Pittsburgh, PA and attended nursing school. Her husband's investments in the stock market did poorly and she turned to writing to aid with the family finances. Her stories and novels were extremely successful and enabled her to live in luxury.
