Artemus Ward was the pen name of Charles Farrar Browne, who was born in Waterford, Maine. The son of a surveyor, storekeeper, and farmer, at 13 he was apprenticed to a printer. He set type for several newspapers in New England before a Boston printshop hired him in 1851. His first humorous sketches, signed "Chub," appeared in the Boston Carpet-bag . During the next 2 years he was a printer in several Ohio towns. In 1853 he became an editor on the Toledo Commercial;

WARD, A. W.WARD, E. S. P. paradox, effected no result, in any degree adequate to its power. He was a warm and constant friend, and gave many proofs of gratitude to his benefactors. Warburton's works were edited (7 vols., 1788) by Bishop Hurd with a biographical preface, and the correspondence between the two friendsan important contribution to the literary history of the periodwas edited by Dr Parr in 1808. Warburton's life was also written by John Selby Watson in 1863, and Mark Pattison made him the subject of an essay in 1889. See also I. D'lsraeli, Quarrels of Authors (1814); and especially John Nichols, Literary Anecdotes (1812-1815), vol. v., and Illustrations (1817-1858), vol. ii., for his correspondence with William Stukeley, Peter des Maizeaux, Thomas Birch, John Jortin and Lewis Theobald. His Complete Works, with memoir by E. P. Kingston, were published in London in the same year, and Sandwiches at New York in 1870. Ward compiled an autobiography, of which an abstract was published in the Art Journal in ^849. Beside the article " Psychology " in the Ency. Brit, (gth, loth and nth ed.) he has published Naturalism and Agnosticism (1899, 3rd ed. 1907), besides numerous articles in the Journal oj Physiology, Mind, and the British Journal of Psychology.

Artemus Ward: (1834-1867) American Humorist Writer Artemus Ward was the penname of Charles Farrar Browne who was born April 26, 1834 in Waterford, Maine. He was apprenticed at age 13 to a printer, where he set type for several newspapers in New England before a Boston print shop hired him in 1851 ( Biography In 1853 he became an editor on the Toledo Commercial; between 1857 and 1861 he was an editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, where the first of the "Artemus Ward " series were published ( Biography Ward assumed the role of a “humorless ignoramus whose writings were studded with malapropisms, misspellings, grammatical errors, and strangely constructed sentences.” Among his many readers was Abraham Lincoln, who read one of Ward's pieces to his Cabinet the day he presented the Emancipation Proclamation, and Mark Twain ( Biography In 1866 he visited England , where he became exceedingly popular both as a lecturer.  In the spring of the following year his health gave way and he died of consumption at
