IDENTITY STATEMENT Reference code(s) : GB 0367 KHB Held at : Institute of Germanic Studies Title: Breul, Karl Hermann (1860-1932) Date(s) Level of description : Collection (Fonds) Extent : 10 boxes Name of creator(s) CONTEXT Administrative/Biographical history : Karl Hermann Breul was born in Hannover, 1860 and educated at Lyceum II Gymnasium, where the headmaster, W Weidasch was a Schiller scholar who believed in the compulsory teaching of foreign languages. Accordingly Breul was obliged to study Greek, Latin, French and English, and volunteered to take classes in Hebrew. His principal tutor was Adolf Ley, former French and German tutor to Lord Kitchener. In 1878 Breul left school to enter Tübingen University. He continued to study during his military service, working on South German dialects, particularly Swabian. At Tübingen he attended the lectures of Christoph Sigwart (1830-1904) and Karl Reinhold von Köstlin (1819-1894) in philosophy and literature. In 1879 he left Tübingen for Strassbourg and spent a semester studying English and French philology under Ten Brink, Boehmer and Eduard Koshwitz (1851-1904). In the winter of that year he left for Berlin and the Friedrich Wilhelm Universität, where he remained until taking his doctorate in 1883, with a thesis on an Old English epic `Sir Gowther', and a lengthy treatise on comparative literature connected with the legend of `Robert le Diable'. His tutors at Berlin included Julius Zupitza (1844-1895), Adolf Tobler (1835-1920), Karl Müllenhoff (1818-1884) and Wilhelm Scherer.

Papers, 1843-1902, of John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley (1826-1902)
Biographical History John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley (1826-1902) was born at Wymondham, Norfolk, the eldest son of the Hon. Henry Wodehouse. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated with a first in classics in 1847. He succeeded his grandfather as 3rd Baron Wodehouse in 1846. The papers form an invaluable record of Kimberley's career in public life and of the machinery of government in the second half of the nineteenth century. They remained in private hands, virtually undisturbed, until their sale in 1991. Many came to the Library in their original bundles with contemporary labels, and wherever possible this order has been preserved. The outline arrangement of the papers is as follows: first, five volumes of political diaries covering the period 1862-1902 (MSS. Eng. e. 2790-4), and a single journal of events during the Gladstone ministry, 1868-74 (MS. Eng. c. 3993), which was edited by Ethel Drus and published in the

This is my working list of candidates to include I'm not yet sure if they are related to me or not! As candidates are eliminated (proven not related) they are marked appropriately and an explanation included. They are kept in the list in case future research proves they can be included. (And to keep them from popping up on the list again!) Never discard good research! Proven candidates' names are marked with an asterisk (*) until they can be added to the database.

Biographical History
Emma Alice Margaret (Margot) Asquith was born in 1864, the sixth daughter of Scots parents Emma and Charles Tennant. Her father 'an exceptionally enterprising and farseeing man of business' (DNB), became very wealthy, and developed a taste for collecting fine art and porcelain. He was a Member of Parliament from 1879 until 1886, and created a baronet in 1885. In 1853 he bought an estate in Peeblesshire, Scotland and enlarged the house The Glen, which was to become the family home in which Margot spent her youth.
