Fishy Heraldry
Lord Liam OShea
The use of fish in Heraldry is a fascinating subject, capable of beguiling antiquarian, historian, Herald, and fisherman alike. It appears that the earliest heraldry containing a fish is that of the Zodiac sign Pisces. This sign is said to be representation of fishing on the Nile, where the season generally starts in February. The symbol for Pisces can be found on the west entrance to Iffley Church in England. Iffley is considered one of the most beautiful still-extant examples of Anglo-Norman architecture. Most heraldry books offer few, if any, references to fish, or fish seen from the eye of the Herald. In heraldry, dolphins, whales, mermaids, shellfish, and other such creatures - either real or fictitious - are all considered to be part of the overly-broad category of simply "fish." As with all heraldic devices, describing the placement and positioning of any items on the shield is a necessity. This description in heraldic terminology is known as a "blazon." Fish are not exempted from proper description in heraldry. There are four heraldic terms used specifically for describing the posture of an heraldic fish; these postures are herein described and then illustrated, below:
  • Naiant - swimming fesswise (horizontally), head to dexter (toward the left as seen by the viewer).

    Day 9
    Real Correlations and False Coincidences
The Brown family on a school night. Billy: Sally: Come on now. There are 6 billion people in the world and I have to have you in this room. Billy: Sally: I have this science report to do. Tomorrow! Why do flies have wings? Billy: Otherwise they would be called walks. Sally: No, so they can beat you to an open garbage can. Get lost! Coincidences come up every day especially if we look for them. Some are real correlations from cause and effect. Stella Brown most likely had the recipe out that she was cooking. The fraction of women over six feet in Tall Girl or on a basketball team is likely to be higher than in a grocery store. Few commercial fishermen toil at their trade in the middle of a desert. Others come after the fact. Any person can say they are 1 in 6 billion. The chance of getting any bridge hand from a fairly shuffled desk is the same as getting all 13 spades. One can easily create astronomically small probabilities in this way. Take for example the census list of a tiny village in China. There are 10 names listed in order. The chance of any one name occurring from the 1 billion population of China is 1 out of 1 billion (1 with nine zeros). The chance of the whole list in order is 1 in 10 (1 with 90 zeros). There are about this many atoms in the visible universe. However, we can say this about any list of 10 people from China.

    Biography
Edward (Philip) Thomas was born in Lambeth, London, of Welsh descent and he was educated at St Paul's college and then Lincoln College at Oxford University (where he studied history). A prolific writer of prose (including biographies of Richard Jeffiries, Swinburne, and Keats), and a moderately successful journalist, he began writing poetry in 1912 under the pseudonym Edward Eastaway) but did not devote himself fully to the medium until 1913 after a meeting with Robert Frost, the American poet, who by then was living in England. Thomas enlisted in 1915 with the Artist's Rifles as a private but was killed two years later at Arras having achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. His poems include some of the most noted pieces from the genre, capturing the love of the English countryside unlike any other. Biography by: Dr. Stuart Lee Return to top of page

This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. Windows 2000/XP and the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer are recommended for the best and quickest viewing of the Hyper-Concordance website. Macintosh users are warned that it can take some time to run the concordance program. After clicking on a line number in the list of "hits," be patient if nothing seems to be happening. It may take a while for the complete text of a long work to be downloaded so that you can navigate in all of it.

IZAAK WALTON LODGE Corner of 63 rd Legend The Izaak Walton Lodge and Restaurant were named in honor of Izaak Walton (1593-1683) English biographer and author who in 1653 wrote “The Compleat Angler”, the classic treatise on the virtues of serene fishing over the violence of hunting. In 1922 a group of individuals in this country inspired by Izaak Walton’s writing formed the Izaak Walton League of America dedicated to the preservation of clean water and natural resources. One of its members, A.F. Knotts, came to the area known today as Yankeetown to fish and hunt. Because of his love of the area and his desire to share in its beauty with his northern friends, he decided to build a lodge at which they could all stay. A.F. and his nephew, Eugene, started clearing the thick vegetation on a piece of land on the Withlacoochee River.

Useful Numbers... Throughout the centuries Derbyshire has been associated with a great number of famous people. Many of whom have made their name and reputation in the Derbyshire locality and have gone on to be pioneers in their own particular field. Included so far (listed chronologically) : Bess Of Hardwick (1518 - 1608)
Bess of Hardwick was renowned for being one of the wealthiest and most powerful woman in the country, second only to Queen Elizabeth 1st. Much of this wealth and power is attributed to the fact that she was married four times, through which she accumulated land and property. She was due to be married as a child, but her opposite died before the marriage could take place. She then married Sir William Cavendish in 1547, whose descendants in line are the Duke of Devonshire, and two years later they bought the Chatsworth estate for a total of £600. The house that stands today is the second to be built on the estate, the first being replaced in the late 17th century. A later marriage saw her becoming the wife of George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, who at the time was one of the most powerful men in the country. When he later died in 1590, Bess was to become the wealthiest woman after the queen in the country. Bess had Hardwick Hall built around this time, which is a major property owned by the National Trust.
