Or the Contemplative Man's Recreation
by Izaak Walton
London: Richard Marriot, 1653. Izaak Walton (1593-1683) wrote one of the bestselling books of all time. The Compleat Angler, or the Contemplative Man's Recreation is the third most frequently reprinted book in the English language after the Bible and the works of Shakespeare. Published in 1653, Walton's first edition was small and was published by his close friend and fellow parishioner, Richard Marriot of St. Dustan's. Subsequent editions of 1655 and 1661 were enlarged and elaborated. In 1676, Charles Cotton, a friend and pupil of Walton's wrote a collaborative addition - Second Part. In all, there were five editions in Walton's lifetime. The NSL holds 36 editions in the rare book room and seven published in the 20th century in the main reading room

Who was Izaak Walton?
Without question, the most famous book ever written about angling is The Compleat Angler published by Izaak Walton in 1653. Since that time, it has been through over 300 editions and is probably the most widely read (or at least the most widely owned) book after the Bible and the Koran . Because The Compleat Angler is an all-around handbook for fishing in England, people not familiar with Walton have the idea that the book is only for fly fishing snobs. It isn't. Izaak Walton was primarily a bait fisherman who came late to the fly. He was a self-made businessman who retired in his 50's and wrote the book that would earn him immortality at age 60. His prose is so strong and true that most people today can read his book with much less difficulty than they can read Shakespeare, for example. "As no man is born an artist, so no man is born an an angler." (from The

Born in 1593 in Staffordshire, England, Izaak Walton moved to London as a young man where he opened shop as a hardware merchant. By 1614 he had a second shop in the well-known Fleet Street district of London, where he met and befriended the vicar of St. Dunstan's parish, Dr. John Donne. Walton was married to Rachel Floud in 1626, and again in 1640 when his first wife died. His second wife, Anne Ken, was the step-sister of Thomas Ken, a young boy who Walton befriended and who would later go on to become Bishop of Bath and Wells and one of England's first hymnologists. In 1644 Walton retired from his trade, moving first to his hometown of Stafford, and again to Clerkenwell in 1650. It was here in 1653 that the first edition of what was to become his best-known piece of literature was published The Compleat Angler: or, The Contemplative Man's Recreation

A web ring for sites that reflect the conservation spirit of Izaak Walton.
Who was Izaak Walton?
Izaak Walton (1593-1683) was an English author best know for his biography of the poet John Donne and for The Compleat Angler , an essay on the joys of fishing. When I chose Izaak Walton's name for this web ring, I hoped to attract chapter sites of the Izaak Walton League of America and those of organizations and individuals with similar aims. This focus proved too narrow, so I broadened it to include sites that aim to "reconcile human activity with the natural world." Izaak Walton's life predated the conservation movement of the 19th and 20th centuries and the environmental movement of the 20th and 21st. But he saw interaction with nature as an essential part of a happy life. He was a Christian who clearly believed that God intended humans to use and enjoy the natural world, and it's probably not unreasonable to think that he would have regarded modern pollution and environmental degradation as sin.
What is a "web ring?"

English biographer, who is best known for THE COMPLEAT ANGLER (1653), a classic guide to the joys of fishing with over 300 new printings. In combines practical information about angling with folklore. The story of three friends, travelling through the English countryside, is enlivened by occasional songs, ballads, quotations from authors, and glimpses of an idyllic and now lost rural life. "Indeed, my good scholar, we may say of angling, as Dr. Boteler said of strawberries, " Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did "; and so, if I might be judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling."
(from The Compleat Angler, 1653-1655)
