Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Izaak Walton (1593-1683) English biographer, who is best known for THE COMPLEAT ANGLER (1653), a classic guide to the joys of fishing with over 300 new printings. It combines practical information about angling with folklore. The story of three friends, traveling through the English countryside, is enlivened by occasional songs, ballads, quotations from several writers, and glimpses of an idyllic and now lost rural life. "Indeed, my good scholar, we may say of angling, as Dr. Boteler said of strawberries, " Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did "; and so, if I might be judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling." (from The Compleat Angler Izaak Walton was born in Stafford. His father, who was an innkeeper, died before Izaak was three. His mother then married another innkeeper. Walton had probably some schooling in Stafford, but he moved to London where he was apprenticed to a cloth merchant. In the 1610s he was a proprietor of an ironmonger's shop. His shop was in Fleet Street and his house in Chancery Lane. In 1618 he became a freeman of the Ironmonger's Company, eventually making himself prosperous through his own drapery business. In 1626 Walton married Rachel Floud; they had seven children who all died young. Rachel died in 1640. She was a relative of Archbishop Cranmer and Walton started to move in clerical circles. His second marriage was with Ann Ken in 1646.

Name: Izaak Walton Birth Date: August 9, 1593 Death Date: December 15, 1683 Place of Birth: Stafford, England Place of Death: Winchester, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: writer Izaak Walton Main Biography The English writer and biographer Izaak Walton (1593-1683) was the author of The Compleat Angler. His works show him to have been a kindly and religious man with a quiet sense of humor and rare common sense. Izaak Walton was born at Stafford on Aug. 9, 1593. Little is known of his childhood and early youth. By 1624 he was established in London as a cloth merchant after a period of apprenticeship, perhaps to his uncle, a haberdasher. Walton's shop was located in St. Dunstan's parish, and he became acquainted with John Donne, who was then vicar. In 1626 Walton married Rachel Floud, a great-grandniece of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer. She died in 1640. That same year Walton's first literary work, a life of Donne, was published. Donne had died in 1631, and a mutual friend, Sir Henry Wotton, had asked Walton to collect material for a life he was writing to preface an edition of Donne's sermons. Wotton died before writing the life, and Walton took on the task.

Walton, Izaak
Encyclopedia Article Walton, Izaak (1593-1683), English man of letters, who wrote what became one of the most famous books in the English language, The Compleat Angler, or the Contemplative Man's Recreation. Walton was born in the parish of Saint Mary, Staffordshire. In 1624 he settled in London as a linen draper or an ironmonger; he retired from business about 20 years later. Walton lived much of his later life at Winchester. The first edition of The Compleat Angler, or the Contemplative Man's Recreation, which Walton wrote when he was 60, appeared in 1653. Walton's charming discourse on every aspect of fishing as a form of recreation is interspersed with dialogue, verses, songs, and idyllic glimpses of pastoral life. A fifth edition, expanded from 13 chapters to 21, appeared in 1676. It included a supplement on fly fishing, written by the English poet Charles Cotton, which then formed the second part of the work. Walton also wrote biographies, including those of the poets John Donne and George Herbert, published in 1640 and 1670, respectively. His verses frequently appeared in prefaces to works written by his friends.

Courtesy of Stafford Borough Council and The Izaak Walton Cottage Trust Izaak Walton (1593-1683) Izaak Walton, best known today as the author of The Compleat Angler, was recognised in his own lifetime chiefly as a biographer. Ironically, little information is known about his own early life. The exact date of his birth is not certain but he was baptised in St. Mary's Church, Stafford on 21st September 1593.
He was the son of an alehouse keeper, Jervis (who died when Izaak was three), and Anne, who remarried another Stafford innkeeper.
Izaak probably attended the town's grammar school before taking up an apprenticeship with his brother-in-law, Thomas Grinsell, a wealthy London businessman. Walton completed his apprenticeship in 1617, and by 1624 he had his own business as a linen draper in Fleet street, London.
During the next 20 years he also held several public posts in his parish of St. Dunstan's-in-the-West and became a senior member of the Ironmongers Company. Membership of a city livery company was as much a social as an occupational distinction and did not imply that the person was actively engaged in that particular trade.
