A former official at Walter s, Frank Russ, verified that Kalmanovitz had been the owner. Russ was shocked and disappointed that everything had to go.

Walter Brewing (continued)
Happy Days Return
When the most popular song of 1933, "Happy Days are Here Again," heralded the end of Prohibition, Walter's brewing facilities were in sad shape. Most of the tanks leaked. Copper used in the plant had disappeared mysteriously, along with most of the motors or engines. The old bottle house was ruined, only one of its motors was intact. Most of the remainder of the equipment was without hope. And even the old saloon building, with its many uses, was remodeled and became the office area. 1961 and 1967 added a total of twenty steel tanks, four with capacities of 750 barrels, sixteen with 635 barrels. Other steel tanks were added elsewhere and even more were stored "for future use". An information flyer written by Edmond B. Koller from about 1951 exalts the economic impact of Walter's beer. Koller was general manager at the time. Over the years the brewery, like any major industry, could not survive and grow without the resources, transportation and markets covering an area far beyond local boundaries. Products from Colorado and adjacent states, New Mexico, Utah, Kansas, New Mexico, Texas and California, among other areas, were utilized. These also provided the markets, which grew and expanded from the early railroad days to the more modern trucking facilities. Further afield, grain, hops, malt and even cornflakes came from as far away as Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Omaha, Nebraska.

Russ Columbo
Hollywood's Tragic Crooner
by Max Pierce He was "The Romeo of Song," "The Singing Valentino," and "Radio's Revelation." From 1931 until 1934, he, Bing Crosby, and Rudy Vallee were crooning rivals for the public's attention. His incredible talent encompassed recordings as a violinist and vocalist, radio, and ultimately the brink of film stardom. His records are considered musical standards of the 1930s. He was romantically linked to a former Miss Universe, a screwball comedienne, and the older sister of one of Hollywood's top stars. He was a comet in the entertainment industry for a three-year period, illuminating Los Angeles' Cocoanut Grove nightclub, Brooklyn's Paramount Theater, Manhattan's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, and entertainment giants NBC, RCA, and Universal Pictures. But like a comet, he passed through our universe all too quickly.
The Final Days Russ Columbo spent most of Friday, August 31, 1934, at what would be his last session, recording the songs from Universal's Wake Up and Dream for the Brunswick label. That evening, he attended the preview of this film at the Pantages Theater on Hollywood Boulevard with Carole Lombard. His best friend of ten years, portrait photographer Lansing Brown, Jr., was also in the audience, but not seated near Lombard and Columbo. After appearing in close to a dozen films, Russ finally received top billing. A Universal press release, prepared by John LeRoy Johnston ended with this quote from Columbo: "At 26, I find that I have just about everything I want from life and am pretty happy the way things have turned out for me."

Continuing the theme of fires where you don't expect them, emerging from stainless steel logs and what-not, today's offering to Vulcan lets you "... enjoy the warmth and glow of a real wood fireplace." Nope, no steel or cement faux fire here. From the website:

The IKEA forest — 'I use their tabletops exactly like panels of plywood'
So said Paul Mackerer, a Pennsylvania-based interior designer, in Jeff Turrentine's February 24 Washington Post Home section article on the Swedish company's dominance in its chosen field. Turrentine noted that icon , a British design magazine, in its March 2005 issue, raised eyebrows with its "21 Most Influential" list when it put IKEA in the number one spot. Kieran Long, icon's deputy editor, noted in the Post story that icon had in a past issue featured an article about a group of Icelandic designers who have "worked out that it's actually cheaper for them to buy their basic plywood in the form of IKEA furniture. Because of its economy of scale IKEA can make the finished products cheaper than [plywood] would cost in Iceland, where they don't really have a lot of trees. So these guys just buy the pieces and then alter or embroider them, or even smash them and remake them."

Michael Esposito Michael Esposito owns the porn production and distribution company Gentlemen's Video. According to the 1998 book The Animal in Hollywood, by former mob enforcer Anthony Fiato and journalist John L. Smith, Michael Esposito is a Lucchese crime family associate. Michael's father Sal Esposito worked worked with the Anthony 'Tony Ducks' Corrallo crew out of Harlem, part of the New York based Lucchese crime family. Here are some excerpts from Pg. 124-125 of ANIMAL: "...Jimmy Coppola, the guy who picked up the cash. He was later stabbed and killed in prison. And all this came about because Harvey Ross [Harvey Rosenthal, longtime employee of VCA, video pirate, duper, died of cancer about 1995] got me [Fiato] to pressure Marty Krause [Los Angeles crime figure], who in turn went to Mike Esposito [longtime pornographer, owner of Gentleman's Video], who went over to his father Sal [who worked with the Anthony 'Tony Ducks' Corrallo crew out of Harlem, part of the NY based Lucchesse crime family] and then went to Walter [Stevens, veteran LA crime figure]. "Sal tried all kinds of things to get us to lay off [pornographers and other businessmen associated with the Lucchese crime faimly]. He called me up one day and said, 'Butchie Peraino says to say hello.' And then he asks, 'Is this coming from Mike [Rizzitello, veteran LA crime boss]?' Because if it is, they know where to go to get it stopped. I [Fiato] said, 'This is coming from me.' I know Butchie is with the Genovese people [NY Mafia family], but he's nothing to me. They were all in the porno business together. The Perainos had that Deep Throat movie. I told Sal, 'Well, say hello to Butchie for me and tell him to stay the hell out of my business.'

Statement of Senator Russ Feingold from the Senate Floor on the Military Families Travel Amendment
April 20, 2005 Mr. FEINGOLD. My amendment is designed to correct a flaw in the current law that unintentionally but severely restricts the number of families of injured servicemembers that qualify for assistance to travel to the bedside of their wounded loved ones. This issue came to my attention when Tina Justice, the wife of Wisconsin Army National Guard 1LT Christopher Justice, contacted my office late last fall. First Lieutenant Justice and eight other members of Company B of the 118th Medical Battalion were traveling in a three vehicle convoy near Baghdad on September 12, 2004 and were waiting to clear a roadblock when they noticed a suspicious vehicle racing towards them. Members of Company B quickly responded, but the driver was still able to blow up his vehicle. The swift reaction undoubtedly saved many lives that day, but eight of the nine members of Company B still sustained injuries from the powerful blast, three severe enough to require evacuation to the United States. First Lieutenant Justice was one of the three soldiers seriously injured and evacuated, first to Germany, and finally to Walter Reed, where he underwent several surgeries for his injuries. All three injured Wisconsin guardsmen received exceptional medical care from the outstanding medical staff at Walter Reed. The guardsmen were also very grateful to be able to see their families who quickly rushed to be with them during this very traumatic time. Tina Justice was one of those who immediately went to Walter Reed to be with her husband, bringing along her 4-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son.

Remaining guests comment on the wedding following the newlyweds' departure. Steve visits Bill in the hospital. Lahoma imparts her doubts to Alice about her insecurities concerning Sam's love for her. Alice waxes philosophical while talking with Dru.
December 2, 1968
  • Sam agrees with Mrs. Gilhooly's assertion about Lahoma as a wife, but clearly with reservations. Magnificent FADE OUT TO LOGO. When Lahoma learns Lee is expected, she dashes out of John's office, leaving Peggy perplexed. Mary is chagrined when Liz catches her in a fib about Steve and Alice. Mrs. Gilhooly and Lahoma. Lee, Sam, and Peggy. Clarke plays a horror-stricken chord to capture Peggy's reaction as Sam arrives unexpectedly back at the office while Lee is in with John. Lee leaves John's office after the awkward encounter with Sam.
