In October 1935, Hugh Walpole wrote the following remarks in his diary: "Shall I have any lasting reputation? Like every author in history who has seriously tried to be an artist, I sometimes consider the question. Fifty years from now I think the Lake stories will still be read locally, other-wise I shall be mentioned in a small footnote to my period in literary history." Perhaps Hugh Walpole was rather harsh and pessimistic in this prediction, but of all his works only the Lake stories or the Herries Chronicle have consistently remained in print. The life of Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884-1941) is extremely interesting. He was a prolific writer who became one of the most popular authors on both sides of the Atlantic, admired by the public and the critics alike. The dust-wrappers of his books are littered with critical accolades that would be the envy of today's leading novelists. In addition, he was an excellent public speaker and his series of lecture tours in the States during the 1920s and 30s were the most popular since those of Dickens eighty years earlier At one point he was a resident scriptwriter in Hollywood, and he both wrote the scenario for and appeared in MGM's highly successful screen adaptation of "David Copperfield", which was released in 1935. Yet this phenomenally successful author sank into critical obscurity after his death in 1941, and the very critics who praised him so highly during his lifetime were the first to condemn him as old fashioned in his writing, and as an opportunist in literary circles.

    Biographical Sketch
Isidore Rosenbaum Brussel was born in Minsk, Russia, in 1897 (according to the Old Russian calendar),* and later moved to Brooklyn, New York, with his family. Brussel attended Brooklyn Polytechnic and worked for three years as a civil engineer before becoming a self styled "book scout," specializing in nineteenth-century English and American literature. Known to his customers simply as "Ike," his lively imagination, infinite persistence, and his wide acquaintance in the book trade, both in his own country and in England, established him as the scout of choice for such discriminating collectors as Oliver Brett (Lord Esher), Morris Parish, Michael Sadleir, and Carroll Wilson, and for many other dealers from London to New York. He earned the bulk of his living by finding stock on all subjects for public, school, and research libraries. Brussel contributed two volumes to Sadleir's Bibliographica series: ANGLO-AMERICAN FIRST EDITIONS, 1826-1900, EAST TO WEST (1935), and its counterpart WEST TO EAST, (1936) which described and analyzed English editions of books by American authors. Brussel died on March 16, 1972, in Brooklyn, at the age of 74.

    Biographical Sketch
Harry Sinclair Lewis was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota in 1885. His mother died shortly after he turned six, leaving his father to raise him and his two older brothers. A local doctor, the boy's father valued hard work above all other virtues and frequently chided Sinclair, who had decided at an early age that he wanted to be a writer, for "mooning around." Lewis entered Yale in 1903 and wrote for several school publications. He studied hard, but also sought adventure, spending one summer vacation sailing to Liverpool on a cattle boat. Graduating from Yale in 1908, Lewis took a job with an Iowa newspaper but after ten weeks moved to New York. A few months later he drifted west to San Francisco and a year later drifted back to New York, via Washington D.C. Once he discovered that he could support himself by writing short stories, he had time to hone his writing skills and work on his novels as well as travel. Between 1915 and 1930 he visited 40 states in America as well as Canada, Mexico, fourteen countries in Europe and three in South America. He met Grace Hegger in 1912, in New York, and married her two years later. Their son, Wells, was born in 1917. Strained by Lewis's inability to settle down, as well as his increasing fame, the marriage ended in 1928. Grace wrote about her life with Lewis in her 1931 novel
