Repository: Woodson Research Center, Fondren Library, Rice University, Houston, TX Title: Edward Knoblock papers Dates: Quantity: 169 items (2 folders) Abstract: Playwright, scenarist and novelist, Edward Knoblock (1874-1945) was born in New York City and educated at Harvard, but spent most of his professional life living and working in Great Britain. The Knoblock papers are comprised of two folders of correspondence received by Knoblock between the years 1904 and 1936, relating to theater in Great Britain during the early 20th century. Most of Knoblock's correspondents in this collection are well-known literary figures of the day, or prominent managers and producers from the world of the theatre, including Sir William Nicholson (1872-1949).

Biographical Note
British journalist and administrator Sir Gerald Reid Barry was born November 20, 1898, in Surbiton, County Surrey. Educated at Marlborough College, Barry was selected in 1916 to attend Corpus Christi, Cambridge, where he planned to study history; however, World War I intervened, and between 1917 and 1919 Barry served in Great Britain's Royal Air Force, attaining the rank of captain by the end of his service. Following the war, Barry became a journalist, writing lead articles for the

Scope and Contents
Correspondence and manuscripts. The collection includes manuscript drafts and typescripts of two volumes of his autobiography: THE OLD CENTURY AND SEVEN MORE YEARS, 1938; and THE WEALD OF YOUTH, 1942. There are also 13 volumes of early notebooks for the period 1894 until 1909 (from age 8 to 22) containing drafts of over 200 poems, 19 short stories and many drawings. There is some correspondence about the autobiography. Also includes 21 letters from Arnold Bennett, 51 letters from Lady Ottoline Morrell, 26 letters from H.M. Tomlinson, 19 letters from Sassoon to his mother-in-law, Lady Gatty, 22 letters from Sassoon to his son, letters from many others, and a typescript of his poem "A love affair" with holograph note.
