Quotes of the Day for 24 September 2003 - Horace Walpole
Horatio Walpole was born at London, England on this day in 1717, fourth son of the prime minister Robert Walpole. He was an indifferent student at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge and soon entered into the first of several government sinecures his father arranged for him. He served as a member of parliament for three different ridings, but showed little political ambition. He had two passions, writing and his "Strawberry Hill" home. He spent a quarter century adding gothic decoration to the house, and filled it with oddities from around the world, giving tours of the house for a fee while complaining about the invasion of his privacy. Along with several novels, he left behind a chest of memoirs totaling some three million words, mostly still unpublished, and over three thousand letters which Yale has now published in 48 volumes. In all science error precedes the truth, and it is better it should go first than last.

A letter from Horace Walpole about Cook's Voyages Contemporary accounts of Cook's journeys do not always give him the praise or credit for his achievements which we now admit. Certainly Banks (and Solander) featured more prominently in newspaper reports, receiving considerably more public acclaim than Cook after the voyage of the Endeavour This letter was written on June l9th. 1784, after Cook's death and the publication of the "Voyages". It is from Horace Walpole (1717 - 1797). The son of the first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, he built the "Gothic" Strawberry Hill , was a prominent man of literature in his day and was described by Sir Walter Scott as 'the best letter writer in the English language'. TO THE COUNTESS OF OSSORY.
Strawberry Hill.
June 19th. 1784. ... Captain Cook's "Voyage" I have neither read nor intend to read. I have seen the prints - a parcel of ugly faces, with blubber lips and flat noses, dressed as unbecomingly as if both sexes were ladies of the first fashion; and rows of savages, with backgrounds of palm trees. Indeed I shall not give five guineas and a half - nay, they sell already for nine, for such uncouth lubbers; nor do I desire to know how unpolished the north or south poles have remained since Adam and Eve were just such mortals... Paul Capper Originally published in Cook's Log , page 303, volume 7, number 4 (1984).

Novelist, politician and antiquarian Born in London, the son of Robert Walpole, he studied at Eton and King's Colleg, Cambridge. He was a Whigh member of parliament (1741-97), but his principal interest was letter-writing. He converted his house at Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, into a Gothic castle, wher he set also a tipography. His The Castle of Otranto (1764) established the genre of the gothic novel, and a forerunner of the modern terror-mystery genre. He collected a library of literary and historic works, for more than 15 thousand books. Despite plenty of evidence to the contrary, Walpole's homosexuality was ignored and even rebutted until the 1960s. Walpole had a loving teenage relationship with Henry Fiennes-Clinton, 9th Earl of Lincoln and later 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyma, who subsequently married. Walpole never married and died in his London house in Berkeley Square. Work
