Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft. Frankenstein, or, The modern Prometheus West Hatfield, Mass. : Pennyroyal, 1983, c1984. The University of Arizona’s Library’s Special Collection does not own an 1818 first edition of Shelley’s Frankenstein . However there are only 350 copies of the Pennyroyal limited edition displayed here; its text is based on a copy of the original three-volume 1818 edition. The second edition of Frankenstein , 1823, was in two volumes and for the third, 1831, Mary Shelley revised the text into a single volume work. It was the 1831 edition that included the first illustrations, including an engraved frontispiece showing the monster first beginning to move and Frankenstein rushing from the room. James Whale’s 1931 film version of Frankenstein opened the market to many illustrated editions of the book in the 1930’s. Booksmith Barry Moser designed and illustrated this Pennyroyal edition. His woodcuts shape the Monster from darkness giving him a form simultaneously ghastly in its malice and transfixing in its suffering. Moser’s prints are arrayed throughout this exhibition.

Lewis Walpole Library brings 'treasure' to BAC
By Bidisha Banerjee A Treasure House in Farmington: The Lewis Walpole Library . The exhibit showcases the highlights of collector William Sheldon Lewis', Class of 1918, hoard of fellow collector Horace Walpole's goodies. Joan Sussler, one of the curators of the exhibition, characterizes Lewis as an independently wealthy man who had the self-discipline, energy, and money to purchase most of the relics (such as books, manuscripts, art, and furnishings) from the original collection of Horace Walpole (1717-1797). Walpole is famous today for somewhat dubious reasons: he was the youngest son of Robert Walpole, the first prime minister of England, and he wrote the first-ever Gothic novel, The Castle of Otronto . Lewis' collection, however, casts him in a different light. It stridently underscores Walpole's historical importance as a collector of artifacts that are deeply interesting to both scholars and to the everyday viewer. In 1771 he entered Pembroke College, Cambridge , and in 1782 graduated B.D. as a `ten year man' (without examination or regular residence). After holding other preferment, on the death of Mason in 1797 he succeeded him as Rector of Aston. Image: Richmond Upon Thames Local Studies Collections. Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797), was famous for his letters and a book called "The Castle of Otranto" - you've read it of course! His father, the politician Sir Robert Walpole, helped to make the House of Commons more important than the House of Lords. Getting back to the point, what I wanted to say was that Horace Walpole wrote in 1768 that "The best sun we have is made of Newcastle coal" I'm from the north of England, but I'm not too sure what he meant. On the other hand the Sun does contain a lot of carbon (more than Newcastle does for sure!) so maybe old Horace wasn't so far wrong! The Sun provides all the energy we need to survive here on Earth. Without the Sun, there would be no coal. Now if Horace Walpole had said that "The best beer we have is made in Newcastle" he'd be talking my language!

Jay Scott Daily Whale archive 8 April 2001 yesterday tomorrow Yesterday I mentioned Horace Walpole, 1717-1797, may he rest in pease porridge hot. He wrote The Castle of Otranto , an intrusion of irrationality into the Age of Reason and the first gothic novel. Thus the evil Horace Walpole is personally responsible for afflicting our once-joyful cities with millions of pale black-clad angst-ridden goths. What a meanie! The damage is done, but still we owe a duty to the future. We must protect this, the Age of Craziness, from any intrusion of sanity. Alan Greenspan must go! the Daily Whale Jay J.P. Larissa Dukelskaya and Andrew Moore (Yale University Press, 800-288-2129), $75.00 (hardcovers). Catherine the Great established the Hermitage picture gallery in Saint Petersburg in 1764. To fill it, this relentless acquisitor bought six large collections of paintings in rapid succession. Ten years after it was founded, the Hermitage had 2,080 pictures. The story of the next large addition, 204 pictures collected by Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745), in 1779 is the subject of this encyclopedic book.
