Walpole, Horace (1717-1797) Horace Walpole was the youngest child of one of the most powerful political figures of the eighteenth century and his wealthy and beautiful wife. The great Sir Robert Walpole, considered by many to be the first "prime" minister, ran English government for a generation. Horace hated him as much as he loved the mother whom he saw offended by his father's infidelities. His parentage, nevertheless, gave him a certain stature and sense of self-importance that never left him. At ten, Walpole was sent to Eton College, where he became part of the "Quadruple Alliance" of sensitive literary friends, which included Thomas Gray, the most popular poet of the century, and Richard West, a sensitive and inverted young writer who died in his twenties and was the cause of a deeply moving series of letters and poems between Walpole and Gray. Walpole, Horace: The letters of Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford. London, 1840. 6 v. Horace Walpole , 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797), was a noted author, historian, connoisseur, and amateur architect. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1741 to 1768, and was a keen observer of politics and society. Though his Anecdotes of Painting in England (1762-63 4 v.) is still useful to art historians, and the Castle of Otranto (1764) is a minor landmark in literary history, being the first Gothic novel in English, Walpole's fame now rests on his letters, of which over 3,000 survive. Historically, they are 18th century England's truest record, portraying social life, public affairs, and contemporary arts and letters with wit, vividness, and accuracy. As an architect, he is most famous for his country house Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham, which he remodeled into a miniature Gothic castle. Horace Walpole. Notes for The Castle of Otranto

Robert Harris
Version Date: May 29, 2000 Horace Walpole (1717-1797), in his attempt to blend the wildness and imagination of the old romances with the probability required of the new fiction, invented the Gothic novel in one step with the Castle of Otranto . Influences or inspirations behind the book include a dream Walpole had, Gothic architecture, castles, old things in general, Aristotle's Poetics (and the idea of pity and fear purging), Horace's Art of Poetry , Shakespeare's plays.
Preface to the First Edition
This preface serves as a frame in which Walpole pretends to be an objective, third party translator. The title page to the first edition reads, "The Castle of Otranto, A Story. Translated by William Marshal, Gent. From the Original Italian of Onuphrio Muralto, Canon of the Church of St. Nicholas at Otranto." Many novels of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries contain frames similar to this because of the benefits they provide. These include:
  • authenticity.

Hieroglyphic Tales, seven fanciful tales by Horace Walpole, have a fanciful history of their own: privately printed in an edition of seven, they were distributed to a few friends only after their author's death. Walpole himself offers this description in his preface: "The Hieroglyphic Tales were undoubtedly written a little before the creation of the world, and have ever since been preserved, by oral tradition, in the mountains of Crampcraggiri, an uninhabited island, not yet discovered." Newly discovered, these tales are now available, alongside equally fanciful illustrations by Jill McElmurry, in a charming gift edition, proving true Walpole's prediction that the Hieroglyphic Tales "will be treated with due reverence some hundred years hence."
