British novelist, playwright, and journalist who produced popular detective and suspense stories and was in his time "the king" of the modern thriller. Wallace's literary output - 175 books, 24 plays, and countless articles and review sketches - have undermined his reputation as a fresh and original writer. Moreover, the author was a wholehearted supporter of Victorian and early Edwardian values and mores, which are now considered in some respects politically incorrect. "This little autobiography is in itself a tribute to the system under which we live. There cannot be much wrong with the society which made possible the rise of J.H. Thomas or Edgar Wallace, that gave 'Jamie' Brown the status of a king in Scotland and put Robertson at the War Office as Chief of the Imperial General Staff."
(from Wallace's introduction to his autobiography, People; Edgar Wallace: The Biography of a Phenomenon, 1926)

London Blue Plaques
Actor and writer Stephen Fry poses outside 54 Eaton Square in London - the former home of actress Vivien Leigh - during the launch of 'Handheld History'  Blue plaques are among the most familiar features of the London streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around twenty plaques each year. From 2004, the scheme will be extended across England on a region-by-region basis; there are already blue plaques in Merseyside, Birmingham, Southampton and Portsmouth.

by Edgar Wallace
from Again Sanders D ON M URDOCK came to the territories with three guns and a breaking heart. At least he had tried to keep the rifts wedged open and still preserved the similitude of hopeless grief and .unconquerable despair. It had been easy enough that night when the New York skyline was falling astern and he had looked over the side of the Berengaria and had seen, almost on the verge of tears, the pilot's hazardous climb to the waiting boat. This man, thought Donald, swallowing a lump in his throat, was going back to a woman who loved him. A sane, shrewd mother of children, who went to church on Sundays and scoffed at ghosts. He could not imagine Mr. Pilot and Mrs. Pilot facing one another, trembling with fury over the matter of manifestations. All that sort of stuff, mostly illogical, but very, very, poignant. So Donald went tragically to the wilds and made a will before leaving New York, leaving half of his four million dollars to Jane Fellaby and the other half to found a society for the suppression of Spiritualism. Mr. Commissioner Sanders did not like visitors in the Territories. They were a responsibility, and usually he ran them up to Chubiri on the lower river (which is as safe as Bond Street and much safer than Broadway) and sent them back to the ship with a thrilling sense of having faced fearful dangers.

Unusual methods of investigation remove the novel from the realm of true plausibility, but details of scenes in and about Chicago make it a prime target for local color enthusiasts. N. Y. Through Crystal, a delightfully decadent socialite with an over-imaginative mother, the reporter is introduced to all that is chic and show in Chicago society. Taking place in the 1920s, One Crystal and a Mother is a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of the newly liberated jazz-age woman.
