COLONY / DOMINION OF CANADA
In 1867 3 British selfgoverning colonies in Northern America ( Canada New Brunswick and Nova Scotia ) were united into a new federal selfgoverning colony, also named Canada. In the course of the following years this new entity gradually evolved towards a semi-independent state and in 1907 the style of colony - which by then no longer reflected the real position of the territory - was dropped and replaced by that of Dominion . Following the Imperial Conference of 1926 Canada became one of the equal members of the British Empire and in 1931, with the Statute of Westminster, it finally achieved full sovereignty, while remaining a member of the British Commonwealth. At the same time the former colony (or province) of Canada was divided into two provinces : - "Anglophone" Ontario - "Francophone" Quebec . For the provinces and territories which later joined the federation see here

Tape Collection (TC 89), 1959 Collection Summary Repository: Creator: John W. Dafoe Family Title: John W. Dafoe Family fonds Dates: Quantity: 2.5 m of textual records. 11 photographs. 2 reel-to-reel tapes. Identification: MSS 3, PC 3, TC 89 Return to Top Biography of John W. Dafoe In 1883, anxious to leave the backwoods of Bark Lake, John Dafoe took a job as a cub reporter under Hugh Graham of the Montreal Star. In 1884 he was sent to Ottawa as a parliamentary reporter, a job which he at first found difficult because he lacked first-hand information about the issues affecting the country at the time. Over the next two years, however, Dafoe learned a great deal about both Canada and journalism. At the same time, he made many life-long friends, including Sir Wilfred Laurier (1841-1919) and several other political figures of the day. In December of 1885 Dafoe became editor of the Ottawa Evening Journal, but resigned six months later and moved west to Winnipeg to work as a reporter for the Manitoba Free Press. Dafoe so enjoyed the prairies that in 1888 he convinced his family to leave Combermere and move to Manitoba. They homesteaded on land near what is now Killarney. While in Winnipeg, Dafoe became steadily more aware of the problems facing the country. He seemed particularly concerned with the struggle to build more rail-lines to the south and west, and with the Manitoba Schools Question. Both of these issues were to be of some importance to him in later years.

    Encyclopedia: List of Freemasons
Updated 9 days 5 hours 15 minutes ago. Other descriptions of List of Freemasons Freemasons say they are not a secret society, but a society with secrets, and throughout history some prominent members of the fraternity have made no secret of their involvement. As a result, some famous (and infamous) Freemasons are well-known. These run the gamut from dictators to revolutionaries, segregationists to civil rights leaders, industrialists to labor activists, humanitarians to serial killers; many that today's Masons are proud to proclaim, and others they prefer to minimize. The membership of Freemasonry is vast, diverse, and resists any single characterization. However, Masonic membership can sometimes be difficult to verify, particularly for historical figures. Membership records are most often kept at the individual Lodge level, and may be lost due to fire, flood, deterioration, or simple carelessness.

    Preface
The British Society for Rheumatology was formed in 1984 by amalgamation of the Heberden Society which was founded in 1936 "for the Advancement of the Society of Rheumatic Diseases" and the British Association for Rheumatism and Rehabilitation which was founded in 1942 as the British Association of Physical Medicine. From the former the British Society for Rheumatology inherited the Heberden Library. The post of Honorary Heberden Librarian is in the gift of the present Council of BSR. This new 6th edition of the catalogue supercedes the 1989 5th edition which was prepared by Eric Bywaters and Geoffrey Davenport. Previous editions were prepared by the first Heberden Librarian Will Copeman with the help of Mr. L.M. Payne the College Librarian. The historical collection was begun by Will Copeman, CBE, TD FRCP (1900-70) based originally on a gift from the Royal Mineral Water Hospital, Bath (Dr. George Kersley), of their then holdings. Since 1964 it has been based in the Heberden Room of the Royal College of Physicians by kind permission of the Harveian Librarian. Since 1970 we have not sought to obtain books already held in the RCP library whose holdings of books of rheumatological interest are listed separately. The current library is principally held at the RCP but certain volumes and journals are in the library in the new BSR Headquarters in Eagle Street. The library is structured in a number of sections which are as follows:
