History of Evolution
Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace Known around the world is the name of Charles Darwin and his history changing book "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" subtitled "the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life" published in 1859. As a young man Charles Darwin was always interested in nature, but since his father saw no future in being a naturalist, he was sent to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. At 16 he left Edinburgh without a degree and enrolled in Christ College at Cambridge University to become a clergyman, since most naturalists of the day were clergyman. He Received his B.A. degree in 1831 in theology and was recommended by the Reverend John Henslow, professor of botany, to Captain Robert Fitzroy of the HMS Beagle to participate in a surveying voyage around the world. Darwin was 22 years old when they sailed from England in December 1831 with the primary mission of charting sections of the South American coastline. While the crew charted the coastline, Darwin observed the distinctive nature of South America and was puzzled by the geographic distribution of species. At the Galapagos Islands Darwin came across several types of finches that although were very similar had apparent adaptations to their particular environments. By the time they had sailed from the Galapagos Darwin had read Lyell's Principles of Geology, and began to doubt the Church's position that the earth was only a few thousand years old. Later Darwin would theorize that these new forms were the result of the accumulation of adaptations to a different environment (Campbell 1990, 428-429).

Some of the earliest surviving thoughts committed to paper by the English naturalist and social critic Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) were in a lecture he entitled "The Advantages of Varied Knowledge". Composed around 1843, it advocates a broad-based approach to the individual's education, one that recognizes the assimilation of a wide range of facts - and their logical integration - as the foundation for a dependably evolving belief system. He argues: "... here we see the advantage possessed by him whose studies have been in various directions, and who at different times has had many different pursuits, for whatever may happen, he will always find something in his surroundings to interest and instruct him ... ". He concludes the essay with the following vivid imagery: Is it not fitting that, as intellectual beings with such high powers, we should each of us acquire a knowledge of what past generations have taught us, so that, should the opportunity occur, we may be able to add somewhat, however small, to the fund of instruction for posterity? Shall we not then feel the satisfaction of having done all in our power to improve by culture those higher faculties that distinguish us from the brutes, that none of the talents with which we may have been gifted have been suffered to lie altogether idle? And, lastly, can any reflecting mind have a doubt that, by improving to the utmost the nobler faculties of our nature in this world, we shall be the better fitted to enter upon and enjoy whatever new state of being the future may have in store for us?

Instability of Varieties supposed to prove the permanent distinctness of Species
O NE of the strongest arguments which has been adduced to prove the original and permanent distinctness of species is, that varieties produced in a state of domesticity are more or less unstable, and often have a tendency, if left to themselves, to return to the normal form of the parent species; and this instability is considered to be a distinctive peculiarity of all varieties, even those occurring among wild animals in a state of nature, and to constitute a provision for preserving unchanged the originally created species. In the absence or scarcity of facts and observations as to varieties occurring among wild animals, this argument has had great weight with naturalists, and has led to a very general and somewhat prejudiced belief in the stability of species. Equally general, however, is the belief in what are called "permanent or true varieties," - races of animals which continually propagate their like, but which differ so slightly (although constantly) from some other race, that the one is considered to be a variety of the other. Which is the

  • Chapter title : Evolutionary Biology A list of vocabulary words is found toward the end of this document Biological evolution evolution ) is a phenomenon that occurs within populations of individuals, rather than to individual organisms. At its simplest, evolution may be defined as progressive change within populations of organisms . Such a definition, however, could use a bit of modification lest we think that spending a week spray painting pink a herd of zebras is evolution . Such phenotypic modification, in the absence of an underlying genotypic modification, is not evolution . Instead, biological evolution involves progressive changes to populations of genotypes Progressive change can occur only if information may be carried, not unchangingly, through time. As we know, genotypic information is carried through time in genomes which are replicated in the course of cell division. We have also encountered the idea of change to genetic information. Specifically, such things as mutation, translocation, nondisjunction, and recombination all constitute genotypic change. The idea of progress in evolution is a tricky concept if defined in terms of net improvement. However

    Alfred Russel Wallace
Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 - 1913) is one of the forgotten fathers of modern science. He was born in the village of Usk in Monmouthshire, England. His father died when Alfred was young. Not long after formal schooling ended for Alfred. He joined his brother, William, in surveying a number of English counties over the next four years. This experience was to teach him how to make accurate observations and detailed recordings, skills which would be of immense importance in later life. Shortly after this, Wallace was appointed to the position of drawing-master at the Collegiate School in Leicester. It was here that he met Henry Walter Bates, a fellow teacher who introduced his young colleague to the methods and delights of botany. After two years the friends set out for South America on an expedition which would see them explore the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers. In order to cover a larger area Bates and Wallace split up. Wallace sent his collection of specimens to Para for storage in advance of transportation to England. He spent over four years in the tropical jungles of Brazil before setting sail for home in 1852. Disaster struck on the high seas. Wallace's ship caught fire and had to be abandoned in great haste. He lost his entire collection and most of his notes. Luckily, the crew and passengers were rescued by a passing vessel and, after further difficulties, arrived at Deal in an exhausted state. Such a calamity would have defeated a lesser person but Wallace turned his energies to writing an account of his time in Brazil
