While a student, Vigny wrote and afterward destroyed a series of neoclassical tragedies based on the figures of Roland, Julian the Apostate, and Anthony and Cleopatra. La tourmente révolutionnaire passée, les Vigny s'installèrent à Paris. À la chute de l'Empire en 1814, Alfred de Vigny entra avec le grade de sous-lieutenant dans les Compagnies rouges ou Gendarmes du roi. C'est à ce titre qu'il accompagna Louis XVIII à Gand lors des Cent-Jours. De 1817 à 1822, il connut donc la vie de garnison, qu'il trouva assez morne, mais il fit aussi ses débuts littéraires en collaborant aux premières revues du romantisme naissant, le Conservateur littéraire et la Muse française. Il y publia surtout les quelques poèmes réunis en recueil sous le titre Poèmes antiques et modernes en 1826. Alfred de VIGNY - Plan - Youth and Romantic works. Maturity and disillusionment. Assessment. b. March 27, 1797, Loches, Fr. d. Sept. 17, 1863, Paris Poet, dramatist, and novelist who was the most philosophical of the French Romantic writers. Youth and Romantic works. Vigny was born into an aristocratic family that had been reduced to modest circumstances by the French Revolution. His father, a 60 year old retired soldier at the time of his son's birth, was a veteran of the Seven Years' War; and his maternal grandfather, the Marquis de Baraudin, had served as commodore in the royal navy. Vigny grew up in Paris and took preparatory studies for the École Polytechnique at the Lycée Bonaparte, where he conceived an "inordinate love for the glory of bearing arms," a passion common to the young men of his generation. Attached to the monarchy by family tradition, he became a second lieutenant in the king's guard when the Bourbons returned to power in 1814 and when he was only 17 years old. Though he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1822 and to captain the following year, the military profession, limited to garrison duty rather than pursued on the battlefield, bored the young officer, who preferred the adventures of a literary career. After several leaves of absence, he abandoned military life in 1827. In the meantime, he had published his first poem, "Le Bal," in 1820. Au cours de sa destinée posthume, il pâtit beaucoup moins que Lamartine, Hugo ou Musset du discrédit jeté sur le romantisme par toute une culture positiviste dont nous vivons la ruine. Dans chacune des générations qui suivirent la sienne, des fidèles recueillirent son message et perpétuèrent son souvenir. Ce furent, parmi d’autres, Baudelaire, dont il avait reconnu le génie, Henri de Régnier, Charles Péguy, André Breton. Des armes aux lettres Alfred de Vigny naquit à Loches, en Touraine. Il appartenait à une famille aristocratique et militaire, que les rigueurs de la Révolution n’avaient pas épargnée. Son père, déjà âgé, était un vétéran de la guerre de Sept Ans. Son grand-père maternel, marquis de Baraudin, avait servi dans la marine royale comme chef d’escadre. Vigny fut élevé, à Paris, par une mère qui avait lu Rousseau. Elle inculqua à son fils unique une religion tout intérieure, le goût de la musique et de la peinture plutôt que des belles-lettres. Mais au lycée Bonaparte, où il prépara, sans persévérance, le concours d’entrée à l’École polytechnique, l’adolescent conçut « un amour désordonné de la gloire des armes », commun à beaucoup d’« enfants du siècle ». Attaché à la monarchie par tradition, il revêtit l’uniforme rouge des mousquetaires du roi, lors du retour en France de Louis XVIII, qu’il escorta pendant les Cent-Jours sur la route de l’exil. Il entrait alors dans sa dix-huitième année.
