History of Political Economy - Volume 32, Number 1, Spring 2000, pp. 170-171
Duke University Press

This collection offers eight original or substantially revised essays from Tilman's career-long work on Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929). The first and last are devoted to Tilman's critique of the common view that Veblen's "social and intellectual marginality were mutually reinforcing" (226). The Veblen that Tilman presents is a man with strong family ties to a respectable, highly successful, hardworking farm family of the upper Midwest. Using some new archival material, but relying much more on reinterpretation of the same material used by Joseph Dorfman in his massive Thorstein Veblen and His America Tilman...

Thorstein Veblen Thorstein Bunde Veblen, b. Valders, Wis., July 30, 1857, d. Aug. 3, 1929, is best known for his book The Theory of The Leisure Class (1899), a classic of social theory that introduced the concept of "conspicuous consumption." Veblen received a Ph.D. from Yale in 1884 and taught at the University of Chicago, Stanford University, the University of Wisconsin, and the New School for Social Research. Veblen argued that a fundamental conflict exists between the making of goods and the making of money. In The Theory of Business Enterprise (1904), he argued that the entrepreneur is a reactionary predator whose perspective is diametrically opposed to that of the engineer or industrialist. Veblen's businessperson makes profits not by providing an outlet for the forces of industrialization and social evolution but by distorting them: by engaging in monetary manipulations, by restricting output to keep prices artificially high, and by interfering with the engineers who actually produce goods and services. The founder of the so-called institutionalist school, Veblen believed that economics must not be studied as a closed system but rather as an aspect of a culture whose customs and habits constitute institutions that are rapidly changing. T h e A u t h o r
Thorstein Bunde Veblen, economist and social critic, was born in Cato Township, Wisc., in 1857. He did postgraduate work at John Hopkins and received a Ph.D. from Yale in 1884. But no job was available for him and he went back to his father's farm. In 1892 he finally got his first academic job at the University of Chicago. He lived eccentrically and was requested to resign. He continued to teach at a number of colleges: at Stanford (1906-09), at the University of Missouri (1911-18), at the New School for Social Research (1919-27), but he was not a successful lecturer. His last years he lived in a shack in the woods near Palo Alto, where he died in 1929. He is best known for his book "The Theory of the Leisure Class", that introduced the concept of "conspicuous consumption".
"Veblen was a professional anti-specialist, he was a social thinker in the grand tradition, for he tried to grasp the essentials of an entire society and epoch, to delineate the characters of the typical men within it, and to determine its main drift" (C. Wright Mills).
