As unconventional in his personal life as in his academic career, Thorstein Veblen always seemed to stand outside of his social and intellectual environment. In 1906, after fourteen years at the University of Chicago, some of which he had spent as a research fellow and instructor, he had risen only to the rank of assistant professor. Yet it was during these same years that he made many of the probing observations of American life which have brought him enduring attention. Veblen was one of the first academics to examine seriously the relationship between consumption and wealth in society. Although he trained and worked as an economist, he incorporated sociological and anthropological research into his own work. His classic work

Thorstein Veblen
The Person
Veblen drew a fine self-portrait in an essay entitled, "The Intellectual Pre- eminence of Jews in Modern Europe," which he wrote toward the end of his career. He says there that the Jewish man of ideas is saved from being intel- lectually passive "at the cost of losing his secure place in the scheme of con- ventions into which he has been born and . . . of finding no similarly secure place in the scheme of gentile conventions into which he is thrown." As a consequence, "he becomes a disturber of the intellectual peace, but at the cost of becoming an intellectual wayfaring man, a wanderer in the intellectual no- man's-land, seeking another place to rest, farther along the road, somewhere over the horizon. [Such Jews] are neither a complaisant nor a contented lot, these aliens of the uneasy feet." Nothing could better characterize Veblen's own life. Intentionally or not, he summed up in this passage the price and the glory of his career.
A Marginal Norwegian
Thorstein Veblen was born on a frontier farm in Wisconsin on July 30, 1857. He was a son of the Middle Border that produced in his generation Lester Ward, Frederick Jackson Turner, Vernon Parrington, and Charles Beard, all men who, like himself, were to mount an assault against the re- ceived wisdom of the intellectual establishment of the East. But unlike these other men, Veblen was almost as much a stranger to the culture of the Mid- west as he was to that of the East.

Thorstein Bunde Veblen
Thorstein Veblen was an American economist and sociologist. Educated at Carleton College, Johns Hopkins University and Yale University, his most famous work, The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899) is a biting satire directed at the leisure class. He coined the widely used phrases "conspicuous consumption" and "pecuniary emulation". Thorstein Veblen began his career in the midst of this period of intellectual ferment, and as a young scholar came into direct contact with some of the leading figures of the various movements that were to shape the style and substance of the newly-minted social sciences into the next century and beyond. Veblen saw the need for taking account of cultural variation in his approach; no universal human nature John Dewey , with whom Veblen was to make contact briefly at the University of Chicago. Veblen made his home in Nerstrand, Minnesota. Veblen's ideas inspired Technocracy, Inc.

The Theory of the Leisure Class
Study Questions
How are the "leisure class" and ownership related, according to Veblen? What are the roots of conventional ownership and of marriage? Consider our contemporary phrase "trophy wife." Veblen sees "emulation" as a key feature of social life in "predatory societies." How do the patterns of emulation change as predatory societies change? What fundamental criticism does Veblen make of standard economics? What feature of the possession of wealth does he point that differs from the use of wealth for subsistence or comfort? How does wealth become an "honor (or status) fetish"? ["Wealth is now itself intrinsically honorable and confers honor on its possessor" (323)]. How does this sort of fetishism compare with Marx’s notion of the fetishism of the commodity? Does Veblen’s theory suggest that Marx’s analysis of the commodity was incomplete? Should we think of commodities as having "status value" as well as use-value and exchange-value? (Or is status value a species of use value?) Watch for Baudrillard on this point. What does Veblen mean by "invidious distinction"? How did individual ownership of "booty" tend to break up early communities? Is there any evidence to think that "Property is still of the nature of trophy" (322)?

Institutionalism is an economic point of view that emphasizes the role of social organization and structure in modern economic life. Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929), an American son of Norwegian immigrants was instrumental in creating this school of thought in the early twentieth century, and he vigorously attacked what he regarded as the privileged “leisure class” in American. To Institutionalists, the important “institutions” of economic life include customs, habits, morals, and laws. These are believed to be more important in shaping economic life than are marketplace principles. Institutionalists emphasize a historical interpretation of social life, asserting that economic generalizations should be relevant to time and place. They believe that economics has few absolute principles, and therefore that economics cannot be a rigorous science. Institutionalist ideas greatly influenced economic policies that were created in response to the Great Depression. Among the most important followers of this tradition in the late twentieth century has been John Kenneth Galbraith.

Chapter 8: The Savage Society of Thorstein Veblen
Summary Thorstein Bunde Veblen (1857-1929) Commentary Glossary Veblen, born of immigrant Norwegians in Wisconsin, grew up in a pioneer Norwegian community in Minnesota. His austere childhood reflected the drab farm life. He grew up remote and aloof, an alienated, enigmatic man whose chief pattern of behavior was nonconformist. At the age of seventeen, Veblen's family sent him to study religion at a pious Lutheran college, where he promptly threw the faculty into an uproar when it came his turn to suggest a way of converting the heathens. He titled his method "A Plea for Cannibalism." To add to his apostate behavior, he converted the niece of the college president to agnosticism and, several years later, married her.

VEBLEN, Thorstein (1857-1929). The American economist and social critic Thorstein Veblen, in his popular book 'The Theory of the Leisure Class', used Charles Darwin's theory of evolution to analyze the modern industrial system. He claimed that industry demands diligence, efficiency, and cooperation among businessmen. What he saw instead were companies run by selfish predators interested in making money and displaying their wealth in what he termed "conspicuous consumption." Veblen's other books include 'The Theory of Business Enterprise' (1904), 'The Instinct of Workmanship and the State of the Industrial Arts' (1914), and 'Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution' (1915). La Viriculture. Ralentissement de la Population - Dégénérescence - Causes et Remèdes . Par G. DE M OLINARI . Paris: Guillaumin et Cie., 1897. 12mo. pp. 253.
GM-VC.1
The motive of M. de Molinari’s book is given in the subtitle, and it is a sufficiently curious motive for a book from an economist of his conservative position and wide range of learning. And the substance of the volume is perhaps no less curious, coming from such a source. The early chapters (i-viii) are taken up with an elementary exposition of the Malthusian premises, M. Molinari’s contribution being a supplementary explanation – not altogether unfamiliar to Malthus – of how, as the outcome of the Malthusian factors, the population of European countries has kept pace in its advance or decline with the advance or decline of the nation’s industrial productivity and with the extension and contraction of the market for the products of the national industries (chapters ix and x). France is especially unfortunate in having suffered a very sensible retardation in its rate of increase. GM-VC.2
