, economist and social critic. Veblen's criticisms of the accepted corpus of economic theory and his analyses of economic and social change helped form the basis of the institutionalist school of economic thought and earned for him a reputation as a skilled satirist and critic of capitalist society. Veblen was born into the culturally isolated Norwegian immigrant community of the Upper Midwest. English was still his second language when he entered college. He remained somewhat of an outsider to mainstream American society throughout his life, and the descriptions of aspects of that society found in his books sometimes have the flavor of an anthropologist's account of an alien culture. Veblen is best known for his first book, The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899), which he presented as a scientific analysis of upper-class mores and behaviors. It portrayed the life of the well-bred individual as an unremitting quest for status in a pecuniary culture—that is, a culture in which status was based upon wealth. It was in this context that Veblen coined the phrase "conspicuous consumption" to describe spending undertaken mainly to demonstrate for others the spender's ability to pay. The book reached an audience far beyond the economics profession. (Most readers believed it to be as much satire as scholarship.) A general theme in Veblen's many books and articles was that the system of private property was no longer compatible with the technological basis of modern industry. Veblen also elaborated on what he believed to be an unstable dichotomy in modern society, differentiating between industrial occupations, which were involved with the production of goods via machine-based processes, and business occupations, which were involved with the purchase and sale of goods in the pursuit of profit. Associated with these types of occupations were two antagonistic worldviews. Veblen insisted that a social upheaval was imminent, as those in industrial occupations were coming to question the social value of business activity and the system of private property upon which it was based.

and why should anyone care?
Thorstein Veblen was a political economist who lived from 1857-1929. Modern economics, which employs mathematical models to describe tiny fractions of overall human economic activity, shares little or nothing with the subject of Political Economy, which attempts to describe the ideas that create the larger picture. Modern economics is a profession for rigorously, but narrowly trained specialists. Political Economy is an occupation for the exceedingly curious generalist.
Some have claimed that Thorstein Veblen was the "last man to know everything"an assertion even he would have disputed. But it is obvious that he certainly did his homeworkhis Ph. D. from Yale University was in Moral Philosophy (his doctoral thesis was on Immanuel Kant) and he spoke 25 languages while understanding history, literature, art, science, technology, devout observances, pedagogy, agriculture, labor relations, and industrial development at a near-expert or expert level.
Veblen wrote nine booksall of which are still in printin addition to a massive outpouring of essays, book reviews, and magazine articles while teaching at The University of Chicago, Stanford University, The University of Missouri, and the New School for Social Research in New York. He even changed the English languagethe phrase "conspicuous consumption" originally appeared as a chapter title in his first book.

He was one of the first academics to examine the complex relationship between consumption and wealth in society. "His significance to the development of political economy and sociology is still to be evaluated. Very great as his influence has been both on his own contemporaries and the later generations of economists and social thinkers, the bulk of it still lies in the future ..." (Horace M. • to introduce into personality and work of American economist and social critic Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929), "the most finished and tenacious criticism" of american business civilization. to show the importance of his thoughts at the present times.

  • Inquiry is addressed to the institutional process of providing the material means of life and to significant problems of institutional malfunction. Economics is a policy science; economic inquiry is significant only to the extent that it is relevant to problem solving through institutional reform. The method of inquiry is evolutionary; the object of inquiry is the social process; the search is for factual explanations and causal understandings. Social value judgments are a part of inquiry and must themselves be objects of analysis; the normative-positive dichotomy is rejected. All political economies evolve and are embedded in social and cultural processes; individuals are both products and creators of these processes. Institutions correlate and coordinate economic behavior in progressive and regressive ways; problems are resolved with progressive changes in structure. The growth of warranted knowledge and its application as technology are prime movers in social change; they are both sources and means of resolving problems through institutional adjustment.

The Theory of the Leisure Class by Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929) J. Watkins Thorstein Veblen was one of the founders of the institutionalist school of economics. The institutionalist school emphasizes the importance of institutions in understanding economic and social processes. Institutions are patterns of human relationships based on a certain set of ideas that establish the rules within which individual choices occur. Institutionalists emphasize the rules of the game, arguing that in general the game is "rigged." An institution may be defined as "Collective Action in control of individual action." The dominant economic institution underlying capitalism is of course the market. Institutionalists emphasize the relationship between culture and the economic system. They view the economic process in terms of evolution, not equilibrium. The economic process is the evolution of institutions. In The Theory of the Leisure Class Veblen focuses on the leisure class and the inferior class as institutions that in fact channel human choices in particular ways. The underlying view is that human beings are not motivated by economic rationality. Rather, humans are motivated by status and saving face. Rational economic man characterized as a lightning calculator of pleasure and pain is not something inherent in human beings, but a product of the capitalist culture and associated institutions.
