The Presence of Yuletides Past
Presbyterian Heritage article by James H. Smylie
December 20/27, 2004 We all have memories, often treasured, of Christmas seasons past. First as children, then parents and grandparents in our older years, we remember the stories we heard first in our youth and have continued to read in our latter years. We all remember Charles Dickens, who left us The Christmas Carol (1843) about the tightwad Ebenezer Scrooge, who was transformed by visits from the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Scrooge finally got with it and celebrated the Yuletide by raising his clerk, Bob Cratchit’s wages and giving support to Bob’s crippled son, Tiny Tim. Dickens was an English author who set the standard for Christmas tales. OUTLOOK readers ought to know that Presbyterians have contributed to our understandings about Christmas with their holiday stories. Pearl Sydenstricker Buck (1892-1973), was the famous daughter of Presbyterian missionaries in China and a missionary herself for a time. She introduced us to the country in “Good Earth” (1931) and helps us explore Christmas in her book, “Book of Christmas” (1974)*. In this collection, she includes stories by several authors with Presbyterian connections that illuminate insights into the meaning of Christmas. (Historical note: Early Presbyterians were not happy with what the Catholics and Anglicans had made of the holiday—a time of revelry and indulgence. By the early 19

Stephanie was originally diagnosed with ITP ( Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura ) and told children usually grow out of this.
In the fall of 2001 our lives where forever to be changed when a bone marrow aspiration was preformed at West Virginia University Hospital. We where told Stephanie has Aplastic Anemia . At the time we had no idea what this was but over the next two and half years came to find out this was the beginning of our worst nightmare. Stephanie was taken to Duke University where she was put on the list for a bone marrow transplant. However no match could be found and all they could offer was a 15% chance to survive a cord blood match of 5/6. Throughout the course of this disease Stephanie received hundreds of blood and platelet transfusions. She received ATG (horse serum) and ATG (rabbit serum) with little effect to a cure.

van Dyke, Henry 1873 (1852-1933) was called to Princeton in 1899 from the pastorate of New York's Brick Presbyterian Church to occupy a chair especially endowed for him by alumni and named for Dean Murray, who had preceded him as pastor of the Brick Church and as professor of English at Princeton. His younger brother, the historian Paul van Dyke 1881, had joined the faculty several years earlier, and the seniors welcomed Henry in the Faculty Song of 1900: ``Here's to Henry the brother of Paul.
He has a large head, but he's not very tall.'' Although ``not very tall,'' his carriage was erect, and his ``large head'' well-formed and handsome. Whether driving his Adirondack horses and smart trap to lecture hall in his early years or walking in academic procession in the scarlet gown of an honorary Oxford doctor of letters in later years, van Dyke was always a striking figure. Although he strongly opposed Woodrow Wilson's Quad Plan, Wilson never held this against him, and later appointed him Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg. He was one of the most popular lecturers in his time, and when he retired in 1923 the trustees congratulated him on having developed in his students ``an appreciation of the best in literature and a genuine love of reading.'' He was a prolific writer, producing more than fifty books of stories, essays, and verse. His Christmas story
