THE STORY OF THE OTHER WISE MAN
BY HENRY VAN DYKE Introduction
THE STORY OF OTHER WISE MAN.
Who seeks for heaven alone to save his soul, May keep the path, but will not reach the goal While he who walks in love may wander far Yet God will bring him where the blessed are You know the story of the Three Wise Men of the East, and how they travelled from far away to offer their gifts at the manger-cradle in Bethlehem. But have you ever heard the story of the Other Wise Man, who also saw the star in its rising, and set out to follow it, yet did not arrive with his brethren in the presence of the young child Jesus? Of the great desire of this fourth pilgrim, and how it was denied, yet accomplished in the denial; of his many wanderings and the probations of his soul; of the long way of his seeking, and the strange way of his finding, the One whom he sought—I would tell the tale as I have heard fragments of it in the Hall of Dreams, in the palace of the Heart of Man. The Sign in the Sky
THE SIGN IN THE SKY
In the days when Augustus Caesar was master of many kings and Herod reigned in Jerusalem, there lived in the city of Ecbatana, among the mountains of Persia, a certain man named Artaban, the Median. His house stood close to the outermost of the seven walls which encircled the royal treasury. From his roof he could look over the rising battlements of black and white and crimson and blue and red and silver and gold, to the hill where the summer palace of the Parthian emperors glittered like a jewel in a sevenfold crown.

    Notes on Life and Works
    Born November 10, 1852, in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and educated in theology at Brooklyn Polytechnic, Princeton, and Berlin, Henry Van Dyke worked twenty years as a minister, first in Newport, Rhode Island, from 1879 to 1883 and next in New York until 1899. His Christmas sermons, his essays, and his short stories made him a popular writer. His poems reveal a classical education as well as a common touch in matters of faith. He became Professor of English Literature at Princeton in 1900. During World War I he acted as American Minister to the Netherlands (913-16) and then naval chaplain, for which he was awarded the Legion of Honour. He died April 10, 1933.

    SHELLEY
    Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) Knight Errant of the Never-ending Quest,
    And Minstrel of the Unfulfilled Desire;
    For ever tuning thy frail earthly lyre
    To some unearthly music, and possessed
    With painful passionate longing to invest
    The golden dream of Love's immortal fire
    In mortal robes of beautiful attire,
    And fold perfection to thy throbbing breast!
    What wonder, Shelley, if the restless wave
    Should claim thee and the leaping flame consume Thy drifted form on Viareggio's beach? Fate to thy body gave a fitting grave, And bade thy soul ride on with fiery plume, Thy wild song ring in ocean's yearning speech! Shelley - a poem by Henry van Dyke
