145. Brookhaven 1958 Video Game - DOE Research And Development (R&D) Accomplishments
The first video game may have been developed at the Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1958. William Higinbotham designed Tennis for Two for a laboratory visitors day.
http://www.osti.gov/accomplishments/videogame.html
Video games capture the rapt attention of millions of children and adults. U.S. annual shipments more than doubled from 69 million in 1996 to 159 million in 1998.* During this time, U.S. sales increased from 3.6 billion dollars to 6.2 billion dollars.* In 1996 video games represented 2% of toy shipments and 15% of sales dollars. By 1998 it grew to 4% of toy shipments and 22% of sales dollars. Total world sales dollars increased from 9.3 billion dollars in 1996 to 14.2 billion dollars in 1998.*
The following account, written in 1981, tells how a Department of Energy research and development program led to the pioneering development of video games.
*Source: Toy Manufacturers of America, Inc. New York, NY
William Higinbotham In 1958, William Higinbotham, then head of BNL's Instrumentation Division, designed what may have been one of the first video games. Back then, Brookhaven had visitors days in the fall, and thousands of people came to tour the Lab and see exhibits set up in the gymnasium. Higinbotham's game was an illustration of what the Instrumentation Division could design and build. It was wildly successful, and Higinbotham could tell from the crowd reaction that he had designed something very special. "But if I had realized just how significant it was, I would have taken out a patent and the U.S. government would own it!" he said.

Cheaper Silicon Found Effective for Solar Cells Nature Materials Characterizing Complex Metal-Cluster Proteins An article on the application of nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) to the study of complex metal-cluster proteins is featured on the cover of Inorganic Chemistry. This work shows NRVS to be especially useful for observing the low-frequency motions of Fe-S clusters in proteins, which are obscured or not readily visible by other methods. These clusters are of great interest due to their potential use as molecular switches that might be used to regulate protein biosynthesis or enzyme stability. Further valuable applications of NRVS may lie in the study of Fe-S clusters at redox levels that have been beyond the reach of of resonance Raman spectroscopy. Human Radiation Experiments The Office of Human Radiation Experiments, established in March 1994, leads the Department of Energy's efforts to tell the agency's Cold War story of radiation research using human subjects. We have undertaken an intensive effort to identify and catalog relevant historical documents from DOE's 3.2 million cubic feet of records scattered across the country. Internet access to these resources is a key part of making DOE more open and responsive to the American public.
