Introduction
Welcome to the Archive of Census Related Products (ARCP), one of several efforts to support the Population, Land Use, and Emissions (PLUE) Data Project at CIESIN. This archive is a collection of georeferenced data files containing census information that spans the United States and its territories. This coverage will expand to include Mexico and Canada, establishing a North American repository for population, land use, and emissions data and integrated data products. These data files are value-added products derived from the original 1990 census files compiled by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. The major components are:
  • TIGER - boundary files based on TIGER 1992 files containing U.S. census geographies. STF - demographic data files containing population and housing characteristics from the 1990 Summary Tape File STF3A and STF1B. STP - migration files derived from the STP28 Special Tabulation for 1990 which show the movement of persons by county.

The decennial census is the only data gathering operation in the United States that is mandated by the Constitution. The first census was taken in 1790 and has continued every 10 years, in the years ending in "0". Its primary purpose is to provide the population counts that determine how seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are apportioned. Census figures also are required to draw congressional and state legislative district boundaries, to allocate federal and state funds, to formulate public policy, and to assist with planning and decision making in the private sector. This guide lists key sources of Census data covering both the latest releases from the current 2000 Census and data going back to 1790. Print and electronic sources are included. Frequently Asked Questions
Social, demographic and economic factors are closely linked to environmental issues. Social norms and politics may enhance or hinder efforts to achieve sustainable solutions. Different groups of people will have varying needs and desires as to what makes a community or watershed sustainable. It is important to be aware of the current demographic, social and economic patterns which may assist or conflict with planning and implementation of solutions down the road. Completing a chart which describes some of these factors will help in the overall planning process. Check out OIK/OS , a web site with with economic trends for a range of geographic areas is now available on-line.

U.S Census Data on Small Community Housing and Wastewater Disposal and Plumbing Practices
Many people in small communities, those with fewer than 10,000 people, don't have access to public sewers. For these residents alternative wastewater systems are often used to solve their communities' public health problems and to help them comply with the Clean Water Act. The 1990 Decennial Census of Population and Housing says 30 percent of all Americans live in small communities; 31.8 percent of the Nation's housing units are located in these communities ( Figure 1 ). The Census contains information on the structural characteristics of these houses, plus wastewater disposal methods and types of plumbing facilities.
