Pope Leo VII
Date of birth unknown; d. 13 July, 939. A Roman and priest of St. Sixtus, and probably a Benedictine monk, he was elected pope 3 January, 936. He seems to have been placed upon the Chair of Peter by the power of Alberic, prince and senator of the Romans. Alberic's authority in Rome was disputed by Hugo, who bore the title of King of Italy (Langobardia). The city was being besieged by Hugo when the famous Odo, Abbot of Cluny, reached it. He had been summoned by Leo, who knew his great influence with both Alberic and Hugo, to make peace between them. Odo accomplished the desires of the pope, and a marraige between Alberic and Hugo's daughter Alda effected at least a temporary understanding between the belligerents. The Bulls of Leo consist for the most part of grants of privilege to various monasteries, especailly to Cluny. One, however, is a letter to Frederick, Archbishop of Mainz. With a view to co-operating in the work of reform which was being accomplished in Germany by Henry I (the Fowler) and his son Otho I, Leo named Frederick his vicar throughout all Germany, with power to proceed against all erring clerics. He would not, however, allow the archbishop to baptize the Jews by force, though he did authorize their expulsion from the cities on their refusal to embrace

Egbert, Archbishop of York
Archbishop of York, England, son of Eata, brother of the Northumbrian King Eadbert and cousin of King Ceolwulf, to whom the Venerable Bede dedicated his history; date of birth unknown; d. 19 November, 766. He received his early education in a monastery, and then went to Rome with his brother Ecgred, where he was ordained a deacon . Ecgred died in Rome and Egbert immediately returned to Northumbria. On the resignation of the Bishopric of York by Wilfrid II in 732, King Ceolwulf appointed Egbert his successor. Shortly after his accession Bede wrote a long letter to him advising him to give much time to study and prayer, to ordain more priests for the administration of the sacraments, and to translate the Creed and the Lord's Prayer into the Saxon tongue. He also urged him to strive to obtain the subdivision of many of the dioceses of the North in order that episcopal visitations might be more frequently made. He called his attention to many disorders that were prevalent and particularly urged him to secure the pallium for himself. Acting upon this advice Egbert obtained the

Phillip Johnston: The plight of the 'Unknown' composer
by Seth Rogovoy (WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., Aug. 19, 1999)
The apocryphal-sounding legend behind Todd Browning's freakish, 1927 silent film, "The Unknown," has it that the only surviving print of the movie was lost for decades, only to be found at a French cinematheque where it was mistakenly stored in a repository with other films of uncertain origin labeled "inconnu," or "unknown." It would be doubly ironic if the compositions of Phillip Johnston were to succumb to a similar fate - to be overlooked for decades until being re-discovered in the "unknown" pile far off in the future as works of singular genius for the relatively-unknown composer and musician has simply been one of the most innovative and creative forces in music of the last 20 years. Perhaps Johnston was unconsciously attempting to underline his marginality when he decided to join forces with the creative spirit of Browning, that chronicler of humorous, freakish cinematic horror ("Freaks," "Dracula"), by composing an original score to accompany "The Unknown," which stars Lon Chaney as an armless knife thrower and a 17-year-old Joan Crawford as his love interest. Johnston's group, the Transparent Quartet, will accompany a showing of the film with a live performance of the score on Saturday night in the Cinema Courtyard at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams at 8:30. Some Things Don't Need An Announcement
Here's the state news of the moment: According to William Stewart (a blogger and also the Executive Assistant to state Senate Minority Leader Vic Sprouse), Sen. Robert C. Byrd will run again in 2006 . It was pretty obvious already; when attack ads were taken out against him in the Charleston/Huntington area, his people ran television ads of their own supporting him in response. You don't use the money that takes for defending your character, and especially not if you don't intend to run in the next election. Byrd will make it official at 11:00 a.m. on September 7th, at the beginning of the Special Session, where plenty of his allies will be supporting him.
Now the question becomes this: Will Rep. Shelley Moore Capito throw her hat into the ring? Other Republicans already want to contest Byrd's seat, but Capito is considered to be the absolute best bet. Byrd normally wins landslide victories at the polls; however, surveys are indicating a statistical dead heat in a theoretical Byrd/Capito race. If Capito decides to go for it, you'll hear about it here first. Or at least, as close to first as my sources allow.

As priest he held a benefice at Rouen for a short time, whereupon he became canon and treasurer at the church of St. Martin in Tours. King Louis IX made him Chancellor of France in 1260 and Urban VI created him cardinal-priest with the titular church of St. Cecilia in December, 1262. Under Urban VI (1261-4) and his successor, Clement IV (1265-8), he was legate in France with powers to offer the Kingdom of Sicily to Charles of Anjou on certain conditions. Under Gregory X (1271-76) he was sent as legate to France a second time, with ample faculties to stem the abuses that had crept into the Church of France. In this capacity he presided over various reformatory synods, the most important of which was the one held at Bourges in September, 1276 (Mansi, Sacr. Conc. nova at ampl. Collectio XXIV, 165-180). Just six months after the death of Pope Nicholas III , Simon de Brie was unanimously elected pope at Viterbo on 22 February, 1281. His election was due to Charles of Anjou who was present at Viterbo and caused the two most influential

Sodom and Gomorrha
Sodom, a city of Pentapolis (Wisd., x, 6; Gen., xiv, 2): Sodom, Gomorrha, Adama, Seboim, and Bala later called Segor (Gen., xix, 22). They were situated in "the country about the Jordan" (Gen., xiii, 10); their exact location is unknown (cf. Gen., xiv, 3, 8, 10, 17; xix, 20-22, 30, 37; Deut., xxxiv, 3). Josephus identifies Segor with "Zoara of Arabia" at the south end of the Dead Sea ("Bel. Jud.", IV, viii, 4; cf. "Ant. Jud.", I, xi, 4; XIII, xv, 4; XIV, i, 4). Conder identifies it with Tell esh-Shaghur, seven miles north of the Dead Sea ; Burkhard, Wetstein, and others with Chirbet es-Safich, three miles south of the Dead Sea ; E. Robinson puts it on Lisan, etc. For the unnatural sins of their inhabitants Sodom, Gomorrha, Adama, and Seboin were destroyed by "brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven" (Gen., xiii, 13; xviii, 20; xix, 24, 29; Osee, xi, 8). Since then, their names are synonymous with impenitent sin, and their fall with a proverbial manifestation of God's just wrath (Deut., xxix, 23; xxxii, 32; Is., i, 10 sqq.; Ezech., xvi, 49; Matt., xi, 23 sq.; II Peter, ii, 6; Jude, 7). William Clark
English priest, date of birth unknown, executed at Winchester, 29 Nov., 1603. He was educated at Douai College , which he entered 6 August, 1587. Passing to the English College at Rome in 1589, He was ordained priest and returned to Engla nd in April, 1592. Active in the disputes between the seculars and the Jesuits on the appointment of Blackwell as archpriest, he was one of thirty-three priests who signed the appeal against Blackwell dated from Wisbeach Castle, 17 November, 1600. Conse quently he was included in the attack which Father Persons made against the characters of his opponents. When Clement VIII declared in favour of the appellant clergy (5 October,1602) and restored to them their faculties, an attempt was made, but in vain, to exclude Clark from participation in the privilege. At this time he was in the Clink prison. On Low Sunday he was discovered preparing to say Mass in the prison and was placed in still closer confinement. Shortly after this he became connected with the mysterious conspiracy known as the "Bye Plot". He was committed to the Gatehouse, Westminister, thence to the Tower, and finally to the Castle at Winchester. Nothing was proved against him in relation to the plot save various practices in favour of Catholic interests; nevertheless he was condemned to death 15 November, and executed a fortnight later. He protested that his death was a kind of martyrdom. He is the author of "A Replie unto a certain Libell latelie set foorth by Fa. Parsons", ect. (16 03, s.l.).

The Tomb of the Unknowns stands atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C. On March 4, 1921, Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater. The white marble sarcophagus has a flat-faced form and is relieved at the corners and along the sides by neo-classic pilasters, or columns, set into the surface. Sculpted into the east panel which faces Washington, D.C., are three Greek figures representing Peace, Victory, and Valor. The Tomb sarcophagus was placed above the grave of the Unknown Soldier of World War I. West of the World War I Unknown are the crypts of unknowns from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Those three graves are marked with white marble slabs flush with the plaza. [D] The Unknown of World War I On Memorial Day, 1921, four unknowns were exhumed from four World War I American cemeteries in France. U.S. Army Sgt. Edward F. Younger, who was wounded in combat, highly decorated for valor and received the Distinguished Service Medal in "The Great War, the war to end all wars," selected the Unknown Soldier of World War I from four identical caskets at the city hall in Chalons-sur-Marne, France, Oct. 24, 1921. Sgt. Younger selected the unknown by placing a spray of white roses on one of the caskets. He chose the third casket from the left. The chosen unknown soldier was transported to the United States aboard the USS Olympia. Those remaining were interred in the Meuse Argonne Cemetery, France.

promulgated a decree of excommunication against all who should defend the forbidden theses; and the faculty issued letters condemnatory of Montesono's errors and conduct, which Denifle conjectures, from their acerbity of speech, were written by Pierre d'Ailly. Denifle also says Montesono would not have been condemned had he not declared the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception heretical. Montesono appealed to Clement VIII , who cited him and the university faculty to Avignon . Later, foreseeing that the case was going against him, Montesono, despite the command under pain of excommunication to remain at Avignon , secretly withdrew into Aragon, then went to Sicily, changing his allegiance to Urban VI , Clement's rival. There and in Spain, wither he afterwards returned, he filled several important positions. In 1412 Alfonso, Duke of Gandia, chose him as head of a legation sent to defend his claim to the crown of Aragon. Besides four works against Clement's claim as pope, he wrote: "Tractatus de Conceptione B. Virginis", a number of sermons, and various opuscula in the vernacular.

Publisher: Square Developer: Square Reviewer: Silverwolf X Released: December 17, 1999 Gameplay: Control: Graphics: Sound/Music: Story: Overall: Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is out now after Square EA decided to release it early for the holidays. So what's so good about this game with the 'Everyone' rating? Chocobo's Dungeon 2 is a simple yet fun RPG that will keep kids thrilled for hours and hardcore gamers challenged for weeks! The game utilizes a random dungeon system so every time you re-enter the same dungeon, the layout and placement of enemies will be different. Simple attacks like Chocobo kicks to more advanced attacks can be used in the game. Not to mention an assortment of spells! The graphics are cutesy, but what the hell, the game is meant for everyone so just live with it! The story centers around Chocobo and his friends in the search for treasure. It's all out mayhem from there on! The game also has one of the cutest intros of any game I've seen so far and it really is a pity the first Chocobo Dungeon wasn't ported over. The sound and music are usually the cheerful and cutesy type and should make those little tots out there happy. But one thing I'll say, the story is simple. Simple to the extent that some hardcore RPG players might not be able to stomach it. Overall, the greatest plus to this game is its replayability. You can play this game over and over and never get sick of it. On a side note though, there is a very UGLY aspect to this game. Imagine: you wander around a dungeon for hours collecting a HORDE of treasure, then you encounter an enemy that hits you with a Doom spell. You lose EVERYTHING you collected in the dungeon and you'd probably be moaning and wailing in that comfy armchair of yours. Trust me, I've experienced it. Oh well, I guess it adds to the replay.
