Why is the sky blue, and sunsets golden?
The color of our sky is caused by the interplay of blue-light-scattering by air molecules, and white-light-scattering by water drops and dust... Blue wavelengths are generally scattered down toward the earth. This makes the sky appear blue wherever it is daytime (and the sun is high in the sky). At sunset, however, the opposite occurs. Glowing beam of the "bat signal," as imagined in a 1950's comic book cover. In reality, rays of light are invisible in the vacuum of space. In earth's atmosphere, however, the rays of our sun are faintly visible, spanning across our planet... appearing as a blue sky.
Leonardo da Vinci had observed that a very fine water spray produced light scattering, but for many centuries only confusing and misleading ideas abounded. The English experimentalist John Tyndall (1820-1893) demonstrated that the scattering from particles small compared to the wavelength of light depends on the wavelength, with blue being much more strongly scattered than red.
Why are sunsets red?

Haslemere
Haslemere is a small, attractive, old country town, nestling in wooded hills, in the south-west of Surrey, southern England on the Sussex-Hampshire border. It lies south of the county town of Guildford, approximately halfway between Guildford and Chichester on the south coast. Due to its location, Haslemere was an isolated town. In the late 14th century, Richard II granted the town a charter to hold a weekly market (1394). Apart from agriculture, Haslemere had important glass, leather and iron smelting industries. Queen Elizabeth declared the town a borough with the right to send two Members to Parliament (reduced under the Reform Act of 1832 to a single Member, which also caused a loss of the status of borough). Queen Elisabeth issued a new charter confirming the right to hold a weekly market (1596), she also granted the right to hold two annual fairs. The town commemorates the charter by holding a biennial Charter Fair in the High Street. General James Edward Oglethorpe who served as the town's MP (1722-1754) was the founder of the Colony of Georgia in North America. Industries during the 18th and 19th centuries included spinning and weaving, basket making.

From: JASA (March 1970): 31-33.
(Editor's Note: The following letter by Jones D. Boles was forwarded to the Editor by Dr. A. E. Wilder Smith.)
I noticed in the Journal ASA 20, 123 (1968) the statement that you (Dr. Wilder Smith) were wrong in saying Darwin believed in the spontaneous generation of life. Darwin believed the law of continuity committed one to this position, so the reviewer is wrong. See MORE LETTERS of Darwin , Vol. II, p. 171. His letter to D. Mackintosh, Feb. 28, 1882. (This is referred to in Clark and Bales, WHY SCIENTISTS ACCEPT EVOLUTION, 44-45). Huxley criticized Darwin for not taking a forthright stand on this in the Origin of Species. (See Leonard Huxley, Life and Letters of Thomas Henry Huxley , N.Y., The Macmillan Co., 1903, Vol. I, p. 352. See Huxley's position in Vol. II, pp. 15-16). This is referred to in Clark and Bales, pp. 80-81.
(A reply by Richard P. Asslie, author of the Journal ASA article referred to above, follows.)
Two questions present themselves in this letter, which concerns my earlier review of an article on "Darwinism and Contemporary Thought

In January 1859, Tyndall began studying the radiative properties of various gases. Part of his experimentation included the construction of the first ratio spectrophotometer, which he used to measure the absorptive powers of gases such as water vapor, "carbonic acid" (now known as carbon dioxide), ozone, and hydrocarbons. Among his most important discoveries were the vast differences in the abilities of "perfectly colorless and invisible gases and vapors" to absorb and transmit radiant heat. He noted that oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen are almost transparent to radiant heat while other gases are quite opaque. Tyndall's experiments also showed that molecules of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and ozone are the best absorbers of heat radiation, and that even in small quantities, these gases absorb much more strongly than the atmosphere itself. He concluded that among the constituents of the atmosphere, water vapor is the strongest absorber of radiant heat and is therefore the most important gas controlling Earth's surface temperature. He said, without water vapor, the Earth's surface would be "held fast in the iron grip of frost." He later speculated on how fluctuations in water vapor and carbon dioxide could be related to climate change.
The above graphs show the percentage of radiation that gases found in the Earth's atmosphere absorb. Methane (CH

John Tyndall (1820 - 1893)
John Tyndall was born into a small landowning family in Country Carlow in Ireland. Although relatively poor, his father ensured his son received a good elementary education. A gifted child, he would walk home with his tutor, working on Euclid's geometrical problems in the snow. He began work as a draughtsman with the Ordnance Survey in 1839, and then travelled to the University at Marburg in Germany to study chemistry and physics. He received his PhD in two years, published his first paper a year later and became a fellow of the Royal Society a year after that. In 1853 he started working alongside Michael Faraday at the Royal Institution where he continued his research, succeeding him there as superintendent in 1867. Over the previous decade he had been researching heat transfer in gases and vapours, with interesting results. Taking some very pure, highly filtered water, he saw that a visible beam of light completely disappeared when it went through the pure water. He repeated the experiment with filtered air and achieved the same result. He had discovered that light only became visible after bouncing off air particles. He experimented further by changing the size of the particles and found that different sized particles scattered light in different ways.

He became good friends with Master Conwill at Ballinabranna School, when he was in his teens. The two could often be seen, on their walks home to Leighlinbridge, figuring out some geometrical problems in the snow. The house in Leighlinbridge where John Tyndall was born in 1820 Tyndall originally started working as a draughtsman with the Ordnance Survey, studying in his leisure time. In 1847, he became a teacher of mathematics at Queenswood College, Hampshire, England. Then at the age of 28 he went to the University of Marburg in Germany to study Chemistry and Physics. In 1850 he obtained his Phd there, and returned to Queenswood a year later.

The Tyndall Centre itself is a unique partnership between nine UK research institutions which together form the Tyndall Consortium . This framework allows for the engineering and technological sciences to combine with the environmental and social sciences and together build a connected and productive interdisciplinary pool of world-class expertise. This is reflected in the Centre's research strategy which is focused on adopting integrated approaches drawn from the natural, social and engineering sciences to deliver new insights into climate change, and to explore and develop sustainable responses to climate change. In doing so, the Tyndall Centre seeks a wide engagement with stakeholders and also participate in education and opinion-shaping.
