Not a Techie Not a Techie
I am not a techie, so I started out only reading your magazine when there were no other magazines on the rack at my favorite Thai place.
I’m hooked now.
I am intrigued by how fast this whole business is speeding toward an uncertain future.
I am also alarmed by technologies like the location-specific (or whatever it is called) mobile phones that I read about in a recent edition. I don’t know about you, but I figure if my friend is three bars away and hasn’t called me, he might not want me barging in on him.
Are the guys that think up these “conveniences” serious herbalists? Do they not realize that all these “conveniences” will most likely be perverted by someone?
Once abductors know about these phones, I think they’ll leave them by the roadside, don’t you think?

Closer Than You Think Closer Than You Think
[Your article] “When Robots Bleed” is very close to reality. In the ‘90s I wrote a novel, “Beyond Aurora - Dreamship,” based on my military experience and on research activity with which I was acquainted. The theme, essentially, was the development of a viable interface between man and machine, in this case the aerospace vehicle, Dreamship. DARPA, then and now, remains the key player in this type research. How far the project has progressed remains, of course, a closed book for the public. Nevertheless the work of Nicolelis and Chapin with monkeys and computers highlights the feasibility of such man-machine interface. And the military applications may now be well along. Regardless, the symbiotic entity, Man-machine, will gradually minimize the lag time between stimulus and response of the machine, as mental signals replace physical control by arm, hand or leg. This may well be one of the most important early results of such research. Definitely an interesting article.

Solutions to the drug war often fall into two rough categories. On the one side, we're told we should pull out all the stops and go ballistic, launch an all-out offensive and let nothing (not even the Constitution) stand in our way to victory. The other side is the legalization crowd – the members of which oftentimes are not for any sort of legalization I'd want. Correctly citing the black-market forces created by drug prohibition and the negative effects that follow in its wake (social breakdown, crime, etc.), they say resolutely we should "legalize drugs."
The only trouble is that they tack on enough restrictions to render the reforms moot. I received an interesting e-mail last night that illustrates this perfectly. Someone named Frank Tymon, who is apparently the author of a number of books, including "Raise Your Child for Success," mass-mailed a missive saying, "THE DRUG WAR WAS LOST ABORNING AND IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE OF STRATEGY." Agreed.

    By Thomas Hargrove
Tribune Reporter WASHINGTON - Getting tired, really tired, of all the debate and legal wrangling swirling around the Rio Grande silvery minnow? You're not alone. The minnow is just the latest of dozens of endangered species throughout America that have frustrated major construction projects, anti-erosion programs for private beachfront property, huge lumbering operations and, in Albuquerque's case, unimpeded access to water during a drought. "There certainly is a basis for the frustration," said Frank Tymon, a professional writer from rural Lancaster, Calif., who serves on his local water board and has followed the fight over the New Mexico minnow. "After all, I lived in Oregon when the spotted owl started to really bother people in the timber industry." The Northern Spotted Owl was placed on the endangered species list in 1990, resulting in termination of logging operations on millions of acres of Pacific Northwest forests. "It was an over-reaction on the part of the government and they certainly didn't do themselves or their reputation any good," Tymon said. The political fight that ensued inspired Tymon to write and publish the poem "Spotted Owl Stew" even though he's not particularly anti-environment: "If the water's scarce and the country's dry
