Tyler, Royall
, author and lawyer. Tyler was a successful lawyer and judge, but it is for his writing that he is remembered. In 1787 he wrote a play entitled The Contrast , the first comedy written by an American to be professionally produced. It contrasted American honesty with British snobbishness and introduced the character of Jonathan, the first of many stage Yankees. The play was very popular and served as a model of American comedy for over fifty years.
