    Biography of Mark Twain :
American writer, born in Missouri, novelist, humorist, narrator; and essayist, whose true name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Fatherless at the age of twelve, Mark Twain carries on various activities: typographer's apprentice, articles writer in his brother's newspaper, steamboat pilot on Mississippi. Not wanting to fight with Southerners to maintain slavery, he runs towards the Nevada Mountains away and works as gold prospector. From 1864, he becomes journalist reporter in San Francisco and travels in Europe as a press correspondent. After his marriage with Olivia Langdon in 1870, he settles in Hartford, Connecticut.
In his first novels, Mark Twain evokes his trips in Europe and Polynesia (The Innocents Abroad, 1869) and makes fun for the prejudices and the behavior of his compatriots. He also conjures up his period as gold prospector (Roughing It, 1872). It is thanks to his two novels "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1876) and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (1885) that he gains celebrity as a humorist. However, Mark Twain writes, in the second part of his works, more serious texts that criticize, with pessimism, the excesses of civilization and the immorality set up in morals. The end of his life is darkened by financial troubles, by the death of a daughter of him and by the death of his wife.
Describing with realism and severity the American society, Mark Twain is one of the first authors using the authentic language that is spoken in the States of the South and of the West. Often compared to Stevenson and to Dickens, Twain excels particularly in a regionalist painting of America, i.e. carried out by a "native", perfectly impregnated of the life in the places he describes. However, a great part of his works waive this principle when he becomes an "observer of people" describing the countries he has visited.

Mark Twain works are enjoyed worldwide. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens and he was born the 30th of November 1835, in the village of Florida, Monroe County, Missouri. After his father's death in 1847, Twain was apprenticed to a printer and wrote for his brother's newspaper. Later, Twain worked as a licensed Mississippi riverboat pilot, adopting his name from the call ('Mark twain!' - meaning by the mark of two fathoms) used when sounding river shallows. After the Civil War brought an end to the steamboat traffic, Clemens moved to Virginia City. On February 3, 1863, 'Mark Twain' was born when he signed a humorous travel account with his new name. In 1864 Twain went to San Francisco to work as a reporter. He traveled in France and Italy and his experiences were recorded in 1869 in THE INNOCENTS ABROAD, which brought him wide popularity, and made fun at both American and European prejudices and manners. In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon. Together they relocated to Hartford a year later. Meanwhile, Twain continued to lecture in the United States and England. Between 1876 and 1884 he published several masterpieces, including Tom Sawyer, the Prince and the Pauper, Life on the Mississippi, and Huckleberry Finn.

American Author and Humorist The man with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds.
    Samuel Langhorne Clemens
(pen name Mark Twain ) was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. Twain is considered the greatest humorist of 19th Century American literature. His novels and stories about the Mississippi River: "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (1876) and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" (1894) are still popular with modern readers. In 1839 the Clemens family moved to Hannibal, Missouri, on the Mississippi River where young Sam experienced the excitement and colorful sights of the waterfront. Like many authors of his day he had little formal education. His education came from the print shops and newspaper offices where he worked as a youth. In 1853 Clemens left Hannibal with a yearning to travel. On a trip to New Orleans he persuaded a riverboat pilot to teach him his skill. By the Spring of 1859 Clemens was a licensed riverboat pilot. At the outbreak of the American Civil War (1861) Clemens chose not to get involved and moved to Carson City, Nevada. After an unsuccessful attempt at gold and silver mining he joined the staff of a newspaper in Virginia City, Nevada. He first wrote under the pen name, "Mark Twain" (meaning "two fathoms" in riverboat-talk) in 1863. "Twain" wrote his first popular story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" in 1865.

To tell the story of how this most American of books, regarded by many as the most influential novel in the nation's history, came to be published first in England is to tell one more chapter in Twain's beleaguered business career; it is also to tell the story of a good prank, one that Twain (or Huck) would have been happy to play. . . . Twain Burned By Longfellow Roast
On this day in 1882 Henry Wadsworth Longfellow died, at the age of seventy-five. Longfellow was the most popular, venerated and taught American poet of his day. Such a pedestal invited comedy, or so Mark Twain thought until he tried to satirize Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Oliver Wendell Holmes before a crowd of their fans. Twain to the End
On this day in 1910 Mark Twain died, at the age of seventy-four. Despite an undercurrent of doubts and dark thoughts, Twain swept along through his last years as the Mississippi to the sea: guests to his seventieth birthday banquet took home his foot-high bust, New York City pedestrians and English royalty lined up to meet him, thousands filed past his casket to see him in his last white suit "as much an enigma and prodigy to himself," says one biographer, as he was to them.
