    Biography Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain
As his literature provides insight into the past, the events of his personal life further demonstrate his role as an eyewitness to history. During his lifetime, Sam watched a young United States evolve from a nation torn apart by internal conflicts to one of international power. He experienced the country's vast growth and change - from westward expansion to industrialization, the end of slavery, advancements in technology, big government and foreign wars. And along the way, he often had something to say about the changes happening in America. Samuel Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri, the sixth of seven children. At the age of four, Sam and his family moved to the small frontier town of Hannibal, Missouri on the banks of the Mississippi River. Missouri, at the time, was a fairly new state (it had gained statehood in 1820) and comprised part of the country's western border. It was also a slave state. Sam's father owned one slave and his uncle owned several. In fact, it was on his uncle's farm that Sam spent many boyhood summers playing in the slave quarters, listening to tall tales and the slave spirituals that he would enjoy throughout his life. In 1847, when Sam was 11, his father died. Shortly thereafter he left school, having completed the fifth grade, to work as a printer's apprentice for a local newspaper. His job was to arrange the type for each of the newspaper's stories, allowing Sam to read the news of the world while completing his work.

"Our Bible reveals to us the character of our god with minute and remorseless exactness... It is perhaps the most damnatory biography that exists in print anywhere. It makes Nero an angel of light and leading by contrast"
    (Mark Twain / 1835-1910 / Reflections on Religion / 1906)
"There is one notable thing about our Christianity: bad, bloody, merciless, money-grabbing and predatory as it is in our country particularly, and in all other Christian countries in a somewhat modified degree it is still a hundred times better than the Christianity of the Bible, with its prodigious crime the invention of Hell. Measured by our Christianity of to-day, bad as it is, hypocritical as it is, empty and hollow as it is, neither the Deity nor His Son is a Christian, nor qualified for that moderately high place. Ours is a terrible religion. The fleets of the world could swim in spacious comfort in the innocent blood it has spilt."
    (Mark Twain / 1835-1910 / Reflections on Religion / 1906)
"Blasphemy? No, it is not blasphemy. If God is as vast as that, he is above blasphemy; if He is as little as that, He is beneath it."

THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (161 KB)
    Fiction
Edward VI of England and a little pauper change places along this extraordinary work. Young Prince Edward lived a life of luxury with servants to grant his every wish. Tom Canty spent his days begging on the streets, and his nights in a hovel with his tyrannical father. When the two boys meet, a simple switch of clothing sets them on a path they'd never dreamed possible. The prince, mistaken for Tom, is forced to live a pauper's life, while Tom unwillingly takes on the life of a prince. And in the end, each boy finds the king inside himself.

Main Books Essays Critiques ... Links Mark Twain By Punkerslut His real name was Samuel Clemens, but he took on the pen name of Mark Twain. Towards the end of his life, Twain held a bitter detestment of religion. His animosity towards Christianity was seething. In his book Christian Science (1907), he attacked the new religion of Mary Baker Eddy; the work was considered sacrilegious. Clemens' book Letters from Earth was suppressed by his daughter and several publishers due to the fact that it was anticlerical. It was not published until 1962, over half a century after Clemens' death. He called the Mormon Bible "an insiped mess of inspiration. It is chloroform in print." (Resource: Who's Who In Hell , by Warren Allen Smith.) Although Huclkeberry Finn and Tom Sawyer were some of his more popular works, many of his antireligious works include, From Adam's Diary From Eve's Diary (1906), and Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven (1909). In one of his essays, "Bible Teaching and Religious Practice," he wrote... The Christian Bible is a drug store. Its contents remain the same; but the medical practice changes. For eighteen hundred years these changes were slight scarcely noticeable. The practice was allopathic allopathic in its rudest and crudest form. The dull and ignorant physician day and night, and all the days and all the nights, drenched his patient with vast and hideous doses of the most repulsive drugs to be found in the store's stock; he bled him, cupped him, purged him, puked him, salivated him, never gave his system a chance to rally, nor nature a chance to help. He kept him religion sick for eighteen centuries, and allowed him not a well day during all that time. The stock in the store was made up of about equal portions of baleful and debilitating poisons, and healing and comforting medicines; but the practice of the time confined the physician to the use of the former; by consequence, he could only damage his patient, and that is what he did. San Francisco History : Mark Twain's San Francisco Western journalist, 1864-1865 Mark Twain's San Francisco In 1863, while reporting on meetings of the Nevada legislature, he first used the pseudonym Mark Twain , derived from a call by Mississippi boatmen sounding the depth of the river. In 1864 he went to San Francisco, where he worked for several newspapers. A few of his sketches were reprinted in eastern publications. One story, "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog," published in the New York Saturday Press , November 18, 1865, was a national sensation. The next year a trip to the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands yielded not only a series of humorous travel letters to the Sacramento Union but also a serious article published in Harper's Magazine . Furthermore, upon returning from this voyage, he launched a career on the West Coast as a humorous lecturer that continued until 1906. In 1866 Twain became a traveling correspondent of the Alta California . A number of letters he wrote for that newspaper told the details of a journey eastward by boat; another series of 17 letters told of his visits to New York and the Middle West in 1867. A letter of June 23 told of his spending a night in a station house in New York, charged with disorderly conduct. Others told of visits to art galleries, theaters, museums, and churches in New York and of brief stays with his family. The year 1867 saw the publication of Mark Twain's first book
