Interviews with Angie Debo, 1981-1985
Collection # 85-013 Prepared by Mildred L. Jackson Go to the Debo Interviews Subject Index Between 1981 and 1985, Dr. Gloria Valencia-Weber and Dr. Glenna Matthews, both faculty members at Oklahoma State University at the time, conducted 17 interviews with Dr. Angie Debo. The interviewers developed questions that covered many aspects of Dr. Debo's life and philosophy. Included in the interviews are discussions of her writing and relationship with publishers, her family and hometown, her employment, her work on establishing Indian land and water rights, and on the history of Oklahoma. These interviews are an important source of information for Angie Debo's philosophies on several topics. Gloria Valencia-Weber was a faculty member in the Psychology Department at Oklahoma State University at the time the interviews were conducted. She received a master's degree from Oklahoma State University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. She met Angie Debo while both were working for the Oklahoma American Civil Liberties Union. Dr. Valencia-Weber served as Director of the Indian Law Certificate Program at the University of New Mexico School of Law from 1994 until Fall 2002. She remains at the University of New Mexico teaching as a full tenured professor. Glenna Matthews possesses history degrees from San Jose State (B.A.) and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her first academic position was in the History Department at Oklahoma State University. She continued her academic career at the University of California, Berkeley. Matthews is the author of "Just a Housewife" The Rise and Fall of Domesticity in America (Oxford UP, 1987), The Rise of Public Woman: Woman's Power and Woman's Place in the United States, 1630-1970 (Oxford UP, 1992), and co-author of Running as a Woman: Gender and Power in American Politics (The Free Press, 1994).

    Shane and the Turner Thesis
This selection is from David Daly and Joel Persky. "The Western: Myth and Reality," Journal of the West , April 1990. The single individual who most shaped our understanding of what the frontier was and of what it meant was Frederick Jackson Turner (1861-1932). Many historians believe that the paper he gave at the American HistoricalAssociation's conference in 1893, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," ranks as a uniquely significant piece of historical scholarship. Turner argued that the West needed to be taken seriously. It was a point of view that was to be endorsed by future Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, both of whom were keenly interested in the study of history. The basis of the Turner Thesis was the idea that the phenomenon of a moving frontier, where one stage of development gives way to the next, explained what made America unique. The distinctive American national character, Turner said, was the result of the erosion of the influence of European culture as Whites encountered the raw, elemental nature of the frontier. Even American democracy, he said, was the product of the frontier. Rather than seeing the opening of the West as solely the result of the work of certain heroic individuals, Turner conceived of American history in much broader social terms. He understood the enormous challenge of survival the Western environment posed. Turner made clear the significance of the physical realities of the West in determining history. His influence can be seen in the work of filmmakers like John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, and Don Siegel. Many of these directors' films reflect a real sense of the immenseness, loneliness, and hardship that was the real West.

    Towards a Biblical Creation-Based Historiography
    Ellen Myers
The great German historian Leopold von Ranke (1796-1886) defined history as ideally the account of that which actually happened in the past. The goal of the historian would be therefore be to investigate and then to describe as accurately, thoroughly and impartially as possible the true course of historical events based on the "purest, most immediate documents."1 Ranke was the father of modern historical scholarship in that he sought to make the study of history a separate, autonomous academic discipline. While his ideal was that of a universal history spanning all times, nations and men, he also taught that "(e)ach event was unique and had to be understood as a discrete phenomenon, each period 'was immediate to God,' who had fashioned it. The historian must treat each period with unswerving impartiality."2 At the university of Berlin Ranke taught two generations of historians his historical philosophy, method, and also the critical study of historical sources (QuelIenkritik). His best-known works include The History of the Popes and German History in the Time of the Reformation. significantly dealing with topics of particular historical interest to Christians. Ranke's conception of history is still thankfully the dominant school of historiography today, despite a kind of "higher criticism" from later historians of various persuasions. Thus we have outright "party" historiographies of the Nazi and Soviet variety, which select and bend the facts found in primary sources (or even falsify the primary sources) to fit the Procrustean bed of their respective ideologies. An example is the effort by modern Soviet historians to construct a history of the development of Russian industry in line with Karl Marx's historical stages based on economic class war (which actual Russian economic history does not substantiate). Another example is that of Frederick Jackson Turner (1861-1932), author of the "frontier theory" of American history. Turner based his theory
