Every bowlers nightmare - Sir Donald at the crease
Australian cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman has died in Adelaide, aged 92. The director of the Bradman Foundation, Richard Mulvaney, said Australia's greatest sporting hero had died in his sleep on Sunday. "Sir Donald Bradman died peacefully at his home, after a short illness," Mulvaney said. "He was suffering from pneumonia before Christmas and was hospitalised for a short period, went home and was really trying to recover." Australian Prime Minister John Howard visited Bradman just over a week ago and admitted he was prepared for the worst.
He was a wonderful man and it is the passing of a legend
Fred Trueman He said: "He was more than just a great cricketer and a great sportsman.

DEAR SIR, Yours to hand yesterday, and in reply I have to state that the widow Doherty [Marjorie Fetters] (my grandmother) left the Parish of Ray, County Donegal, Ireland, about the year 1820, and landed with her family in Magudavic, walked to St.John, NB, and eventually got by schooner up to Great Village, NS, except my father, William, who remained for sometime longer in St. John, but also got to Great Village, NS and gradually worked his way to Richibucto, where he had an aunt (Mrs. John McGregor and sister to Mrs. Joseph Irvin, of Point de Bute or Tidnish). My grandmother likely found her way for a time with part of her large family to Point de Bute, where one of her daughters ( Jane ) married Richard Jones , of that place. One of her daughters (

Sixty Years of Discovery
By Ian Darragh The Canadian Geographical Society was founded at a turning point in modern Canadian history, and this fact led to its early struggles. It was conceived in the heady days of February 1929, when anything and everything seemed possible. The economy was booming. The Great Crash and Black Thursday were inconceivable. However, it was May 1930 by the time the first issue of Canadian Geographical Journal , as this magazine was then known, was published. What a gulf separates those two dates! The Great Depression had begun in earnest, and the fledgling Society and its magazine had to be nurtured through the longest economic crisis of this century. The guiding light and first president of the new Society was a fascinating Canadian, Charles Camsell. Born in Fort Liard, N.W.T., he was the son of a chief factor of the Hudson’s Bay Company. A geologist by training, he had explored and mapped large parts of Northern Ontario, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories for either railway companies or the Geological Survey of Canada. Camsell had been elected a fellow of the British Royal Geographical Society in 1915 and had long lamented the lack of a similar society in this country.
However, when it came time to look for a model for a Canadian geographical society, Camsell’s inspiration clearly was the National Geographical Society, founded in Washington, D.C., in 1888. Membership in the British society was restricted to explorers and “qualified individuals”. However, as the National Geographical Society had done, Camsell announced that the Canadian society would be “open to anyone interested in geographical matters” willing to pay the modest annual membership dues of $3. And, like the

THE CHIGNECTO ISTHMUS AND ITS FIRST SETTLERS BY HOWARD TRUEMAN PREFACE. For some years past I, in common with many others, have felt that all
letters of interest and accessible facts in connection with the early
history of the Truemans should be collected and put in permanent form
not because there is anything of interest to the general public in the
records of a family whose members have excelled, if at all, in private
rather than in public life, but in order that the little knowledge
there is of the early history of the family might not pass forever out of the reach of later generations with the death of those whose memory carries them back to the original settlers. In getting together material necessary for the work, numbers of interesting facts concerning other families came inevitably to light. In order to preserve these facts, and at the same time give the book a slightly wider interest, I decided to write a short history of those families

TANTRAMAR - THE YORKSHIRE EMIGRATION A Rose Across The Ocean -
The Yorkshire Emigration The Tantramar region of Eastern Canada has a deep connection to our part of the world. Between 1772 and 1776 over 1000 people left Yorkshire for a new life in the new world. A descendant of these pioneers AL SMITH tells the history of the region, and the story of Governor Michael Franklin and family ties that live on today. The early settlement history of Tantramar is a fascinating tapestry of human struggle dating back more than 300 years for people of European descent and more that 3000 years for aboriginal peoples. Prince Henry Sinclair, from the Orkney Islands off northern Scotland, may have been the first European to visit the area. Scanty evidence suggests that Prince Henry traveled through Chignecto in the summer of 1398 following traditional travelways connecting the Northumberland Strait and the Bay of Fundy.

The period 2004-2013 is the 250th anniversary of the
Seven Years War, a.k.a. the French and Indian War
In Canada, the designation French and Indian War is nearly unknown.
English Canadians typically refer to the war as the Seven Years War , while
French Canadians call it the Guerre de la conquete (War of the Conquest),
since it is the war in which New France was conquered by the British and
became part of the North American portion of the British Empire.

He settled near Fort Cumberland, on the farm now known as the "Fowler homestead." Mr. Keillor had five childrenthree sons, John, Thomas and Thompson, and two daughters, Elizabeth and Ann. On April 25th, 1811, Mrs. Keillor, Mrs. Trueman 's mother, who had been living at Prospect since 1806, died. Her husband, Thomas Keillor, a stonemason by trade, died some years earlier. There is at Prospect a copy of a power of attorney given by Mrs. Keillor to her "trusty friend," Stephen Emmerson, to act for her in collecting rents and selling claims in Skelton, England, in connection with the property owned by her late husband. This document was copied by Amos Botsford and witnessed by Wm. Botsford and Henry Chapman, jun., and dated Oct. 30th, 1810. Mrs. Keillor was buried on the old farm at Fowler's Hill beside her husband in a small burying-ground that was formerly surrounded by a stone wall, part of which is still standing. Mrs. Keillor's maiden name was Mary Thomson. She and two other married sistersJane, the wife of John Carter, and Ann, the wife of William Truemancame with the Yorkshire emigration. These sisters left one brother at least in England

Howard Florey
Howard Florey is as linked to penicillin as Sir Alexander Fleming is. Howard Florey, who developed a way of mass producing penicillin, should be seen as being as important as Jenner Koch Pasteur and Lister in the history of medicine. Florey was born on September 24 th 1898, in Adelaide, Australia. He died on February 21 st , 1968, at Oxford in England. He trained as a pathologist who, with Ernst Chain isolated and purified penicillin (discovered in 1928 by Sir Alexander Fleming ) for general clinical use. This mass production of penicillin proved to e vital to soldiers during World War Two where diseases that had previously been difficult to cure in a combat situation could now be treated far more effectively. For this research and achievement, Florey, Chain, and Fleming shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1945. Florey studied medicine at Adelaide and Oxford universities until 1924. After holding teaching and research posts at Cambridge and Sheffield universities, he was professor of pathology at Oxford between 1935 and 1962. He was appointed provost of Queen's College, Oxford in 1962, and chancellor of the Australian National University, Canberra (1965), positions he held until his death. He was knighted in 1944 and made life peer in 1965. Florey investigated tissue inflammation and secretion of mucous membranes. He succeeded in purifying lysozyme, a bacteria-destroying enzyme found in tears and saliva, and characterized the substances acted upon by the enzyme. In 1939 he surveyed other naturally occurring anti-bacterial substances, concentrating on penicillin. With Chain, he demonstrated its curative properties in human studies and developed methods for its mass production. Following World War II and the work of his research team in North Africa, penicillin came into widespread clinical use.
