Editorial
Dear friends, Well, another winter is at our doorstep and now is the time to start thinking once again of that cozy spot in our favorite chair with a good story to read (preferably by a hot fire!). And we have those stories for you here at the ole' White Fence as we continue prospecting that rich Tantramar mine for those golden history nuggets. But in time I got to know Ralph well and he would not want me to waste a second on him; I can hear him now: "don't waste any time, keep digging; there's lots of work to be done!" And so we will keep on working Ralph! Charge on fellow miners! Deep in the tunnels of our mine, prospector Marcie Fullerton found some beautiful diamonds which I am anxious for all of you to see. But I can only show you just one of her jewels for this issue; I'll keep the others for the Christmas issue Marcie! You will also note a relatively long announcement about a number of events dealing about artist John Hammond. But Meredith Fisher's announcement and the detailed biographical notes compiled by Dodie Perkin and Meredith deserve treatment as a full article. So read on and enjoy! And also for this year's first issue, miners Barb Fisher and Colin MacKinnon sent me a couple of gems which did not need any polishing; I just put them here for you as I received them (but I found them so shiny that my eyes are starting to hurt . . .).

liff and I listened as Mum and her sisters talked of the tragic death of their Uncle Theodore. He had been killed, more than forty years ago, while driving a team of horses across the railway tracks, above Saint John. His widow and three young daughters moved to the States.
Within a few days, these cousins, along with their mother, their families and other relatives would be arriving for a visit.
On 14 July, 1875, the Trueman family of the Chignecto Isthmus held an all-day picnic at Prospect Farm, Point de Bute with about 500 in attendance. They started their planning with a meeting at Prospect, the family homestead, on 4 January 1875. They wanted to celebrate in some fitting way the arrival of the first Trueman family in Nova Scotia, which took place a hundred years previously.
It was decided to number the descendants and have a written out short history or genealogy of the family and also to place a marble monument to mark the last resting place of those who first came to America.
Since family correspondence of the early 1800's from Snillsworth and Bilsdale, Yorkshire, England had been preserved, the 500 friends, relatives and descendants who attended, probably had an opportunity to read some of the lines that were penned and thus caught a glimpse of life as it was in years past as well as the news of births, marriages and deaths that had happened across the ocean.

3131 TAMU, College Station TX 77843-3131, USA ebickel@tamu.edu Abstract Sports examples can be wonderful vehicles for teaching OR/MS concepts. Baseball is particularly well suited to teaching statistics/probability, Markov decision processes, and decision analysis. This paper details a baseball example I developed to teach fundamental decision making skills. This example has been used successfully to teach decision making to undergraduates and graduates in technical and non-technical disciplines. It has also been used effectively in industry for training new MBAs and seasoned executives. 1. Introduction Sports examples can be wonderful vehicles for teaching OR/MS concepts for several reasons. First, their well-defined structures and rules lend themselves to quantitative analysis. Second, most students can immediately relate to a sports example because they have either participated in or watched many sporting events. This is not always the case with other examples (e.g., newspaper boy). Finally, sports examples are enjoyable, and students learn more effectively when they are having fun. Baseball is a strategic and mentally challenging game. No one has said it better than Roger Kahn (
