"The study by Health Grades Inc., a health-care consulting firm in Colorado that rates hospitals, estimated that medical errors in U.S. hospitals contributed to almost 600,000 patient deaths over the past three years, double the number if deaths from a study published in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine."- The Wall Street Journal, July 27, 2004

Ch. 5 - Loyalists At Other Centres: Halifax: It was with the final evacuation of New York by the British forces in 1783, that there was to come to Halifax over 25,000 Loyalists. James S. Macdonald told of it: "Halifax at close of the year, was so crowded with refugees and soldiers, that the cabooses of the transports were brought on shore, and ranged along Granville and Hollis streets, and there the people fed and warmed. There was terrible distress; most of the transports, over 150, were detained by the government all winter, for shelter for the women and children until the spring of 1784, when the most of them were distributed over the province. Macdonald in an other article, writes: "Every shed, outhouse, store, and shelter was crowded with people. Thousands were under canvass on the Citadel, and at Point Pleasant, everywhere indeed where tents could be pitched. Saint Paul's and St. Matthew's churches, were crowded, and hundreds were sheltered there for months. Cabooses and cook-houses were brought ashore from the ships, and the people were fed near them on Granville and Hollis streets. There were many deaths, and all the miseries and unsanitary conditions of an overcrowded town. For four months, the bulk of these 10,000 refugees were fed on our streets, and among them were many reared and nurtured in every comfort and luxury in the homes they had to fly from."

Posted 9:11 am Lawrence Kaplan had an article in The New Republic recently that explained, among other things, that 9/11 did not have an effect military recruitment, rates of community service or volunteer work, charitable donations, attendance at houses of worship, or interest in the news (foreign or domestic). So, noting the four-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, was this the day that changed everything? And if so, what, exactly, has changed?

Catherine Howard
Catherine Howard was born into one of the most famous of noble families – Catherine's father was the younger brother of the Duke of Norfolk. Catherine became Henry VIII’s fifth wife. She was Anne Boleyn’s cousin and in the social circle in which she lived, it would have been expected that she would have been seen by Henry , who after the divorce from Anne of Cleves , was once again looking for a wife. By 1540, Henry had become fat and he had lost the muscular physique he had when he was younger. He was now 49 and his lifestyle was starting to catch up with him. Catherine was just 15 or 16 when Henry asked for her hand in marriage. She was considered to be very beautiful, lively and kind. Henry described her as a "rose without a thorn". Why did she marry someone 34 years older than she was? Simply because she had no choice – Henry was king and Catherine's family welcomed the opportunity her marriage presented to move closer to the king. What a fifteen to sixteen year old girl thought about marrying a 49 year old man is not recorded. Catherine did commit adultery. Given the age difference and Henry’s character perhaps this was inevitable. Catherine had an affair with Thomas Culpepper of the King's Privy Chamber. It was soon discovered and Henry showed both of them no mercy.

PREFACE.
For some years past I, in common with many others, have felt that all
letters of interest and accessible facts in connection with the early
history of the Truemans should be collected and put in permanent form,
not because there is anything of interest to the general public in the
records of a family whose members have excelled, if at all, in private
rather than in public life, but in order that the little knowledge
there is of the early history of the family might not pass forever out of the reach of later generations with the death of those whose memory carries them back to the original settlers. In getting together material necessary for the work, numbers of interesting facts concerning other families came inevitably to light. In order to preserve these facts, and at the same time give the book a slightly wider interest, I decided to write a short history of those families connected by marriage with the first and second generations of Truemans, and also, as far as material was available, of the first

Written by Howard Trueman in 1902, this book is an account of the settlement of the Nova Scotia/New Brunswick border area known as the Chignecto Isthmus, which separates the Bay of Fundy from the Cumberland Strait. Mr. Trueman's work examines in particular the Yorkshire migration of 1772 - 1775, the Eddy Rebellion, and his own family, the Truemans, in the history of the region. Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada Fort Lawrence Unique architecture found in Fort Lawrence FORT LAWRENCE - Nova Scotia, because of its location on the Atlantic seaboard, was one of the first present day provinces to be explored and settled by Europeans. It was also the setting of a number of battles between the English and French governments to decide who would dominate North America politically. During the 1700's Cumberland County extended into present day New Brunswick and included the area on which Fort Beausejour stands. The Fort was the site of military activity between 1751 and 1833. Originally a French stronghold, Fort Beausejour was captured by an Anglo-American force in 1755 and renamed Fort Cumberland.
There are unfortunately few examples of architecture from this early period in Cumberland's history, but one notable exception is the Chapman House in Fort Lawrence, located on Mount Whatley Road. Owned by George and Marilyn Carter since 1971, the structure is a handsome example of Georgian architecture. Built circa 1775, it is one of the few brick houses in Cumberland quite possibly the oldest dwelling in the County.
Georgian style architecture was named for the English kings George I through George IV, and buildings so named followed classical rules of architecture for proportions and symmetry. It was introduced to North America through English architectural style books. Almost all Georgian homes are simple, rectangular blocks with windows, doors and chimneys carefully balanced.
