Conservation work has started on the Trevelyan papers, for which the Bindery was awarded money from the National Manuscripts Trust. A Conservator, Karenna Fry, started work on the collection on 1st September 1999 and the project is to run for two years. The collection is part of Special Collections in the Robinson Library. The papers are housed in several sizes of flap boxes and sorted into brown envelopes within the boxes and stored on mobile shelving.
The collection amounts to 77 boxes and 9 other items (large volumes, transcripts, new accessions) making 86 items on the shelving in total. The collection is numbered WCT 1-333 and this is how we will be monitoring the progress of the conservation project, by showing for example 5% flattened already (19/333x100). BRITISH IRELAND
The English conquest of the Irish Kingdoms and lordships started in 1171 when King Henry II (1133 - 1189, r. 1154 - 1189) landed on the island and was recognized as overlord by a number of local Irish rulers. In the course of the following centuries English rule was gradually extended over the whole island, which was proclaimed a Kingdom united in a personal union with England in 1541. The last remnants of Irish self government were abolished in 1801 when the island was fully integrated into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. (1) (1) Conquest was completed by the 17th century. But Irish resistance actually never ceased. See here for more.
BRITISH ADMINISTRATORS
(In the covered period all officials were members of the British Government. Those listed (C) also were members of the Cabinet) Lord Lieutenants (C from oct 1918) 1852 - 1925 1921 - 1922 Edmund Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, Viscount Fitzalan of Derwent, first Catholic Lord Lieutenant since the union of 1801 1855 - 1947 Some lists mention French as Lord Lieutenant for a first time in may - aug 1916, others (and some bio's) don't. As in the concerned period he was Commander of the Home Forces in the U.K. (dec 1915 - may 1918) it indeed seems very improbable that at the same time he formally also held the position of Lord Lieutenant. Some confusion may result from the fact that as Commander of the Home Forces he indeed was the highest (military) official in charge of the suppression of the Easter Rising in 1916.

LOCAL ENGLISH ADMINISTRATIONS
England had no separate administration within the United Kingdom. So this page is concerned with some local administrations, in most cases symbolic remnants of medieval jurisdictions : - the Confederation of the Cinque Ports - the Duchy of Cornwall - the Duchy and County Palatine of Lancaster - the Island of Lundy - the Scilly Islands - the Island of Wight
CONFEDERATION OF THE CINQUE PORTS
A Confederation of the Cinque Ports - in charge of the naval defence of the English southeastern coast - most probably already existed before the Norman conquest of 1066. It was however only under the Norman Kings and their successors that the original Cinque Ports were given charters granting them fargoing administrative, economic and judicial privileges, in exchange for a regular supply of a war and transport fleet. After the creation of a regular English fleet in 1496 by King Henry VII (1457 - 1509 ; r. 1485 - 1509) the importance of the Ports gradually declined and by the middle of the 19th century they had lost most of their privileges and rights. The members of the Confederation included (and still include) : - the five original Cinque Ports : (in order of importance) Hastings New Romney Hythe Dover Sandwich - the two "Ancient Towns", which joined in the 12th century : Rye Winchelsea - the "Limbs", which joined in the 15th century and were attached to one of the above listed members : (the limbs were not directly concerned by the royal charters, but had the right to share the privileges of the town to which they were attached, in exchange for providing help to these towns) Lydd (limb of New Romney) Folkestone, Faversham and Margate (limbs of Dover) Deal and Ramsgate (limbs of Sandwich) Tenterden (limb of Rye)

Trinity is the largest and richest of the colleges in Cambridge, and is now a home to around 600 undergraduates, 300 graduates, and over 160 Fellows. The college was founded by Henry VIII in 1546 and most of its major buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Trinity was formed by combining Michaelhouse and King's Hall , two older colleges. Michaelhouse had existed since 1324; King's Hall had been established by Edward II in 1317 and refounded by Edward III in 1337. Much of the college was re-designed and re-built by Thomas Nevile, who became Master of Trinity in 1593. This work included the construction of Nevile's Court between Great Court and the river Cam. The Court was completed in the late 17th century when the Wren Library, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, was built. Its sister college is Christ Church, Oxford, which was founded by Henry VIII in the same year.

      (1) From the North American Review, CXLII (January 1886), 74-80. The advance toward parliamentary electoral reform is conventionally associated with the passage of three loosely-called reform bills; the first in 1832, the second in 1867, and the third in 1884-1885. Their general tendency was to extend the suffrage from a landed class, constituting a minority of the nation, to all males who possessed or occupied some property; and to redistribute seats in Parliament so that representation would have a more direct relation to population. When Gladstone was Prime Minister, the Act of 1884, adding about 2,000,000 voters to the rolls, in effect gave agricultural workers the franchise; that of 1885 pretty generally established single member constituencies approximately equal in population.
    1. THE most interesting political problem which the world presents to-day is undoubtedly that now pressing for solution in England. For the first time in their history, the majority of her people have power. Henceforth England is democratic. Cajoled, overruled, thwarted for generations by the aristocratic classes, who have doled out to them from time to time only such small measures of reform as were necessary to prevent revolution, the people have never been fully heard. A climax was reached, however, last session, when an act was forced upon the House of Lords which at once transferred power from the privileged few to the masses. It is this fact which renders the situation there so interesting to the political student.
