Beard, Charles A. (1876-1958): § Beard had been on the faculty of Columbia University. In his earlier works his liberalism shone forth (he figured that, as property owners, the framers of the American Constitution were chiefly interested in constructing a charter to protect their wealth). He was a strong advocate of the idea that the study of history should include consideration of all cultural forces. He wrote several books with his wife, a historian of both the feministic and the labour movements. Beard's early liberalism faded toward the end of his life, when he began advocating more conservative ideas; he became an isolationist in foreign policy, and an outspoken critic of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

    CHARLES EDWARD TREVELYAN (1807-1886)
CHARLES EDWARD TREVELYAN CET was Sir Walter Calverley Treveyan’s cousin. Walter left him the Wallington estate when he died in 1879. This was because he did not believe that one man should inherit more than one property, he had no children to pass it on to, and he genuinely liked his cousin and family. The Trevelyan’s other estate- Nettlecombe in Somerset was left to cousin Alfred who contested the will and that property remained in that side of the family. It is currently leased out to the Field Studies Centre for educational use. He was born in 1807 and brought up at the family home in Nettlecombe, and educated at Harrow. He went into the Indian Civil Service aged 20. Within months he made a name for himself by denouncing his superior (the Resident of Delhi) of corruption. This is referred to as the ‘Colebrook affair’ in the correspondence (1827-35) In 1834 in Calcutta he married Hannah More Macaulay (1810-73), the sister of the poet Macaulay who he knew in India. They had three children- Margaret (1835-1906), George Otto (1838-1928) and Alice (1843-1902). He was also in charge of relief of Irish famine of 1845-9 for which he has been attacked, but was awarded a knighthood. Much of his working life was taken up with reform of Civil Service administration, the army purchasing system (1853-71), and civil service [with Stafford Northcote he controversially advocated replacing patronage with competitive exams] (1856-9) education (1829-40) and in the Treasury (1840’s). There are also papers relating to the Indian Mutiny 1857-60 and correspondence with Florence Nightingale 1858-78.
