Quick menu , for those who don't want to read the introductory comments (again). I prefer the most rigorous classicism, so if you're looking for something else, this isn't the place. These lists represent varying degrees of depth, with regard to the number of examples given and the distinctions made; the level will become clear from the texts themselves. Here are the topics, some contain sub-lists, others don't: Appendix on how to buy the recordings mentioned in this list List of recently modified files When I first wrote these lists as purely text documents in 1991, with the exception of some Indian music, there were precisely zero other resources available. That had a definite impact on the level of detail I chose, and while there is some incentive to add material of a more technical nature in subsidiary documents, I have not done so yet. Experts are not likely to find my discussions informative, except perhaps with regard to the existence of particular recordings. My goal was and is to attempt to convey some sense of what I personally enjoy about the music, and ultimately to entice people to make their own judgements from live or recorded music rather than getting too deeply involved in text. Welcome
The Traditional Ballad Index is a collaborative effort designed to help people find reference information on folk ballads. It is not itself a source of song texts or of discussion of ballads, although it contains some summary information. The current version of the Ballad Index, as of April 3, 2005, is 2.0. We expect to release new versions regularly. Click here for a list of features new in this version. If you expect to use the Ballad Index heavily, we suggest that you download the appropriate software for your computer. The Ballad Index software allows you to conduct more complex searches than the online version, and save the results in more convenient form. Please note: The Traditional Ballad Index is a catalog of traditional song. It contains descriptions of, and sometimes quotes, these songs, many of which have so-called adult themes and some of which use rather coarse language. If you are offended by these things, you should stop here. (On the other hand, if you are looking for such things, go somewhere else; there won't be enough to keep you interested.)
Here you can proceed to:

Traditional Navajo Recipes
The following recipes come from Elaya K Tsosie, a Native Navajo. She teaches Native American History at at two different New York State Colleges. The modern Navajo eats about the same kind of thing the rest of the inhabitants of the United States eat. In times past, however, they grew just about everything they ate, except for wild game. Aside from the traditional wild fare such as deer and rabbit, they also ate bear, gophers and prairie dogs. They didn't eat snakes as this would give them bad dreams and require a medicine man for a cure.

Is there a primitive mentality essentially
different from a civilized one? Or do people learn and mentally organize their experience in similar ways in spite of differences in their cultures and in the content of what they have to learn? We know that all people, if raised in the appropriate environment, prove capable of learning to speak any language and to think and operate effectively in the context of any culture. But what about different people's traditional bodies of specialized lore? Are they organized in similar ways, or not? Cognitive psychologists are interested in understanding how specialists mentally process and store their knowledge so that they can retrieve it as needed. Traditional navigators of the Central Caroline Islands provide a case in point. The Carolinian art of navigation includes a sizable body of knowledge developed to meet the needs of ocean voyaging for distances of up to several hundred miles among the tiny islands and atolls of Micronesia. Lacking writing, local navigators have had to commit to memory their knowledge of the stars, sailing directions, seamarks, and how to read the waves and clouds to determine currents and predict weather.

Traditional New Year Foods Probably more food is consumed during the New Year celebrations than any other time of the year. Vast amounts of traditional food is prepared for family and friends, as well as those close to us who have died. On New Year's Day, the Chinese family will eat a vegetarian dish called jai. Although the various ingredients in jai are root vegetables or fibrous vegetables, many people attribute various superstitious aspects to them: * Lotus seed - signify having many male offspring * Ginkgo nut - represents silver ingots * Black moss seaweed - is a homonym for exceeding in wealth * Dried bean curd is another homonym for fulfillment of wealth and happiness * Bamboo shoots - is a term which sounds like "wishing that everything would be well" * Fresh bean curd or tofu is not included as it is white and unlucky for New Year as the color signifies death and misfortune. Other foods include a whole fish, to represent togetherness and abundance, and a chicken for prosperity. The chicken must be presented with a head, tail and feet to symbolize completeness. Noodles should be uncut, as they represent long life. In south China, the favorite and most typical dishes were nian gao, sweet steamed glutinous rice pudding and zong zi (glutinous rice wrapped up in reed leaves), another popular delicacy.

Historical and Philosophical Aspects of
Lapa'au Traditional Kanaka Maoli Healing Practices Kekuni Blaisdell, M.D.
Honolulu, Hawai'i Richard Kekuni Akana Blaisdell is a professor of medicine at the University of Hawai'i, in Honolulu and is a co-founder of E Ola Mau, an organization of Hawaiian health professionals. His research interests include the spleen and blood disorders, the history of medicine, Polynesian medicine and Hawaiian health. He is also on the board of Ke Ola Mamo, convenor of the Pro-Hawaiian Sovereignty Working Group and coordinator of Ka Pakaukau, a group of twelve organizations seeking independence
Historically, traditional kanaka maoli lapa'au (Hawaiian medicine) may be considered in three periods: (1) the pre-Western over 1 500-year era, beginning with the arrival of the first Polynesians from South Oceania who settled in Hawai'i about 100 A.D., until the 1778 chance-arrival of the first European explorers. (2) The period of Western contact with the introduction of European-American and Asian diseases and ways, cultural conflict, subsequent 1893 illegal U.S. armed invasion and 1898 U.S. forced annexation of Hawai'i. (3) The modern period of further de-Hawaiianization and coercive, Western assimilation up to the 1985 E Ola Mau Native Hawaiian Health Needs Study Report re-awakening interest in, and support for, lapa'au. *1
