47. Iberian Folk Instruments
Photographs, descriptions, and audio samples of Traditional instruments and musicrelated images from the Iberian Peninsula.
http://www.tamborileros.com/tradiberia/e_inicio.htm
"IBERIAN FOLK INSTRUMENTS" WELCOME TO MI WEB !! In this page, I want to show you a series of Traditional Musical Instruments of the Iberian Peninsula that are part of my particular collection or that I have gone photographing along the time with the purpose of disclosing the knowledge of this type of instruments. The classification of these it has been made by families, following the approach of Sachs-Hornbostel, based on the system that produces the sound. Luckily, it is very difficult to embrace all the instruments that exist in the Iberian Peninsula, but little by little we will go making bigger the web among all. Also, if you are interested in some instrument in particular, in the section of Links they will go appearing links to specialized addresses in each instrument, whenever there are them. Anyway, if you are very interested in my work, I recommend you to visit the Spanish version too, because it is usually much more updated than the english one. Try to translate it with the Altavista translation service.

51. Aaronc - African Religions
A short overview of the many Traditional Religions practiced among people of differing cultural, linguistic, and ethnic groups; gives names for the supreme deity in many African languages; part of a larger site on polytheism.
http://jpdawson.com/modrelg/relafri.html
African Traditional Religions The Bushmen and Hottentots live in southern Africa and were the original inhabitants of the land when the first Europeans arrived at the Cape. Today the true Bushmen (Khoisan) are restricted to the Kalahari Desert and Namibia. Modern Bushmen pray to celestial spirits and tell myths and legends about them. They pay special attention to the moon, which comes into their speculations about the origins of death, a common African preoccupation. The Hottentots have largely become Christian and most of their ancient religious beliefs have disappeared, so much so that it was once thought that they had no former religion. Their ancient gods appear to have been a mingling of natural forces and ancestral spirits. In the sub-Saharan and forest areas there are small groups of Hamites (Caucasians, related to Europeans) such as the Fulani of Nigeria, but they are Muslims like the major Hamite groups of North Africa and the Tuaregs of the Sahara. A vast majority of Africans south of the Sahara are Negroes, and they generally have a belief in a supreme being, though their conception of his role in daily life differs according to localities. Despite the universality of belief in a supreme being in Africa regular worship is not generally given to him. There are no great temples or organized cults for him in most places, though there are a few exceptions. Yet despite this absence of formal worship and temples over most of Africa, the supreme being (or God) is a reality to many people. He is transcendent and there is a popular myth, told from West African to the Upper Nile, which says that he or the sky his dwelling place was once much nearer to the earth.

  • As anyone who visited his site regularly knows, Barry Taylor was not able to maintain his site. When Barry asked me if I wanted to take over his site I could not say no. Barry was not only the person who inspired me to learn about midi, but his site was among the first traditional music midi sites on the web - and his music is incredible. Barry's music has spread throughout the net and I felt it would be shameful for the original to be lost. So I am housing most of Barry's site here.
  • This site will not be updated and there will be no technical support or answers to questions beyond what you can find on the FAQ or ReadMe pages. These pages are here solely to share the love of traditional music and of Barry's music in particular.
