21. African Religion
Although there are cultural variations in belief among Africans, author Kwabena Dei OforiAttah believes they are not strong enough to blur the common strands that give Africa its distinctive religious character.

African Traditional Religion: Triumphs of Rituals
Introduction by Kwabena Dei Ofori-Attah The bedrock of African traditional religion is faith; faith based upon dogmatism. It is that kind of faith that does not call for any hard evidence. Again, it is that kind of faith that does not engage in metaphysics. It is simply "what was will be." In most cases, perception, intuition or the presence of a perplexing event can have a compelling effect on the belief system. Nothing is taken for granted when it comes to traditional religion. An individual may challenge the gods at his or her own risk. This does not in any way mean that all Africans have a common traditional religious practice. There are variations but they are not strong enough to blur the common strands that give Africa its distinctive religious practices. African spirits draw their strength, inspiration and wisdom from God. In African traditional Religion, God is seen as the author of life, the maker of everything. African traditional religion belief does not offer any other version of the creation. It is simply the work of God, the omnipotent, the everlasting, ever faithful, and merciful Father of all. Symbols figure prominently in the African society. These are transferred into the religious realm to establish a strong link between the unseen "spirits" and the living. It is common to see some of these symbols on the walls of the shrines or in the clothes worn by the traditional priests and other people who wish to express their mood through any of these symbols.

    29. Tara Rokpa: Traditional Tibetan Medicine. Basic Principles
Describes history and origins, principles, diagnosis, treatment methods, and materia medica.
    http://www.tararokpa.org/TTM.html
    Foreword
Traditional Tibetan Medicine (TTM) has absorbed two great Asian systems of medicine, namely those of India and China (see history section), as well as elements of Mongolian, Persian and other medical systems. It is a vast and highly evolved medical science which can no more be summed up in a few web pages than can modern Western medicine. Its depth, vastness, subtlety and maturiy as a medical system strike nearly all who come to study it. In Tibet, these theoretical medical studies took at least five years (with a very intense curriculum), followed by years of internship or apprenticeship for practical experience.
TTM is, then, no simple folk medicine based only upon the hazards of indigenous experience. The information in these pages is a sketch of some key points and fundamental notions found in TTM. These will be presented in particular reference to our work at Tara where, for some seven years, we have enjoyed a privileged contact with some of the finest physicians and hospitals on the Tibetan plateau.

    Theories of Folktale Origin
No one theory listed below has been proved true; probably all of them have some points of validity. Monogenesis ("single origin") Theory:
    • The earliest theory; also called the "Indo-European Myth Theory" or "Aryan Myth Theory".
    • Belief that all folktales were descended from the myths of the Indo-Europeans or Aryans.
      • Indo-Europeans were supposedly ancestral to many races from India west through Europe.
      • Almost all European languages are descended from the Indo-European language; possibly many folktale elements have descended also.
      • Does not take into account similar folktales from other parts of the world.
      Polygenesis ("many origin") Theory:
      • Belief that people everywhere have the same experiences and thus develop the same stories.
      • People in all parts of the world are not alike.
      • Although stories might have originated in similar experiences, it is unlikely that they would be as similar in details as they have proved to be.
      Psychological explanations:
      • Freud believed that folktales arose from our unconscious needs and frustrations, which grew out of our childhood experiences.
