It's free! Save it. Sense and nonsense in nutrition and health Naturopathy, sometimes referred to as "natural medicine, is a vitalistic and largely pseudoscientific approach said to "assist nature." Naturopaths assert that diseases are the body's effort to purify itself, and that cures result from increasing the patient's "vital force." They claim to stimulate the body's natural healing processes by ridding it of waste products and "toxins." The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) states that "naturopathic medicine has its own unique body of knowledge, evolved and refined for centuries" and is "effective in treating all health problems, whether acute or chronic." According to a 1989 AANP brochure: The main difference [between naturopathic and conventional medicine] is in philosophic approach. Naturopathic physicians treat patients by restoring overall health rather than suppressing a few key symptoms. Naturopathic physicians are more concerned with finding the underlying cause of a condition and applying treatments that work in alliance with the natural healing mechanisms of the body rather than against them. Naturopathic treatments result less frequently in adverse side effects, or in the chronic conditions that inevitably arise when the cause of disease is left untreated.

MADDOX , William E. - I am searching for any record of a shooting death that occurred on a street car in Alabama around 1900 (+/- 5 years). The shooter was a street car conductor, my great grandfather, who fled Alabama to Oklahoma to avoid prosecution. His name was William E. Maddox. (Actually, I'd settle for ANY record at all of him from Alabama. Would've been born 1885ish...best guess.) Os naturopatas asseguram que as doenças são esforços do corpo para se purificar, e que a cura vem como uma conseqüência da intensificação da "força vital" do paciente. Alegam estimular os processos naturais de cura do corpo livrando-se das sobras e "toxinas." À primeira vista, essa abordagem pode parecer sensata. Entretanto, um exame mais detalhado mostrará que a filosofia naturopata é simplista e que suas práticas estão envolvidas com charlatanismo. A noção de uma "força vital" ou "força da vida" uma força não material que transcende as leis da química e da física originou-se em épocas antigas. Historiadores a chamam de doutrina do vitalismo.
