Thoreau, Henry David (1817-1862) In essays, journals, and poems, Henry David Thoreau recorded impassioned expressions of the beauty and the agony of love between men. Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on July 12, 1817. He attended the newly founded Concord Academy and, after taking several leaves from his studies to earn money and to regain his health after his first attack of tuberculosis, went on to graduate from Harvard with the class of 1837. Thoreau is perhaps best known for his stay at Walden Pond, chronicled in Walden (1854), and his night in jail after refusing to pay a poll tax to a government that supported the Mexican War and endorsed slavery. He wrote about this latter act of protest in "Resistance to Civil Government," popularly known as "Civil Disobedience," an essay that has inspired many, including Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to Walden and his well-known speeches and essays on antebellum social concerns, he wrote

QUESTION ANSWER What happened to the house Thoreau built at Walden?
On September 6, 1847, Thoreau left the house which he himself had built and in which he had lived for two years, two months, and two days. Emerson then bought the house from Thoreau and resold it to his gardener, Hugh Whelan, who intended to convert it into a cottage for his family. Whelan's drinking problems, however, prevented him from completing the necessary modifications and the house remained empty until 1849, when it was purchased by James Clark, who then moved it across town to his own farm and used it for grain storage. The roof was removed in 1868 and used as part of a pigsty, and in 1875 the floor and remaining timbers were made into a stable shed. Later, timbers from the collapsed shed were used to patch up the Clark barn. One replica of the house has been erected across Route 126 from Walden Pond, and another was built at the Thoreau Institute in 2001. Contact the Thoreau Institute for information about visiting the reconstruction.

"If a man a d v a n c e s confidently in the direction of his dreams to live the life he has imagined , he will m e e t with a success unexpected in c o m m o n hours." ~ Henry David Thoreau American writer and transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was born in Concord, Massachusetts , graduated from Harvard, and moved to Walden Pond , "to live deliberately" on July 4, 1845. He stayed there two years, two months and two days. He wrote poetry , chopped wood, meditated , and lived with the land to find a greater understanding of life. "We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aid, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn," he wrote. Thoreau championed the human spirit . He discovered that by connecting with nature , life could be a celebration of hopes and dreams. Every person has been given the truly remarkable gift to live life fully. "The world is but a canvas to our imaginations ," he philosophized. His best friend Ralph Waldo Emerson said Thoreau "chose to be rich by making his wants few, and supplying them himself... Every fact lay in glory in his mind, a type of the order and beauty of the whole."

Carried out it finally amounts to this, which also I believe, - 'That government is best which governs not at all' .....

Henry David Thoreau Quotes
The language of friendship is not words but meanings. The most I can do for my friend is to simply to be a friend. Goodness is the only investment that never fails. If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence of it in their opinions and lives that they have heard it. It would not leave them narrow-minded and bigoted. There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root. I came into this world, not chiefly to make this a good place to live in, but to live in it, be it good or bad. Men have a singular desire to be good without being good for anything. We hear and apprehend only what we already half know. It takes two to speak truth - One to speak, and another to hear. Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth. The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.

Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard University. From 1841-1843, Thoreau lived in the house of Ralph Waldo Emerson and was introduced to the philosophy known as transcendentalism. In 1845, Thoreau moved to a hut on Walden Pond, just outside of Concord. There, he spent most of his time observing nature and medititating. He supported himself with odd jobs around the area, such as gardening and carpentry. Emerson joined him there from 1847-1848. Only two of Thoreau's works were published during his lifetime, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849) and Walden ;or, Life in the Woods Walden , his most important work, chronicles Thoreau's meditations on non-materialism and reverence for nature. In "Civil Disobedience"(1849), Thoreau explained why he chose to go to jail instead of paying a poll tax which supported the Mexican War. This method of protest was later taken up by such peaceful revolutionaries as Mahandas Gandhi and by Martin Luther King, Jr. Other collections of Thoreau's writing were only published after his death. They include

America's most famous nonconformist, Thoreau rebelled against the Establishment of his day. He rejected the world's definition of 'success' and demanded a life of personal freedom. He went to the woods, built a humble cabin on the edge of Walden Pond, Concord, Massachusetts...and learned about nature and life. Henry David Thoreau lived at Walden Pond from July 1845 to September 1847. His experience at Walden provided the material for the book Walden, which is credited with helping to inspire awareness and respect for the natural environment. Thoreau, Henry David
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) perhaps best known as the author of Walden , was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on the 12th of July, 1817. An American essayist, poet, and practical philosopher, he was renowned for having lived the doctrines of Transcendentalism as recorded in his masterwork, Walden (1854), and for having been a vigorous advocate of civil liberties, as evidenced in the essay "Civil Disobedience" (1849). The picture at right was one of three daguerreotypes taken in June of 1856, after a Walden reader in Michigan had sent money and requested a picture. It shows Thoreau at age 39. Van's recent song "Choppin Wood" features the phrase "quiet desperation", which is an obvious reference to the following passage from the Economy section of Walden The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. More information available at:
