Biographical note
Noted American author and philosopher who is most famous for Walden and his treatise on civil disobedience. Hailed by some as the first environmentalist, Thoreau was a profound philosopher on the human condition. His essay Civil Disobedience was inspirational for Tolstoy and Mohandas Gandhi. Thoreau embarked on the two-year experiment in simple living on July 4, 1845 when he moved to the forest around the shores of Walden Pond, not far from his friends and family in Concord. He left Walden Pond on September 6, 1847 to live with his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson and Emerson's family in Concord, Massachusetts. Thoreau refused to pay taxes in 1846 based on his opposition of the mexican war, and was later jailed. Thoreau described this event in his essay entitled Civil Disobedience. Walden, detailing the two years and two months he spent at Walden Pond, was published in 1854. More ...

Better known for his writings on Walden and Civil Disobedience , Thoreau also penned an address, " Slavery in Massachusetts ", and delivered it at an anti-slavery rally at Harmony Grove on the east bank of Farm Pond in Framingham, Massachusetts, July 4, 1854.
    SLAVERY IN MASSACHUSETTS
    by Henry David Thoreau
They who have been bred in the school of politics fail now and always to face the facts. Their measures are half measures and makeshifts merely. They put off the day of settlement indefinitely, and meanwhile the debt accumulates. Though the Fugitive Slave Law had not been the subject of discussion on that occasion, it was at length faintly resolved by my townsmen, at an adjourned meeting, as I learn, that the compromise compact of 1820 having been repudiated by one of the parties, "Therefore,... the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 must be repealed." But this is not the reason why an iniquitous law should be repealed. The fact which the politician faces is merely that there is less honor among thieves than was supposed, and not the fact that they are thieves. As I had no opportunity to express my thoughts at that meeting, will you allow me to do so here?
Again it happens that the Boston Court-House is full of armed men, holding prisoner and trying a MAN, to find out if he is not really a SLAVE. Does any one think that justice or God awaits Mr. Loring's decision? For him to sit there deciding still, when this question is already decided from eternity to eternity, and the unlettered slave himself and the multitude around have long since heard and assented to the decision, is simply to make himself ridiculous. We may be tempted to ask from whom he received his commission, and who he is that received it; what novel statutes he obeys, and what precedents are to him of authority. Such an arbiter's very existence is an impertinence. We do not ask him to make up his mind, but to make up his pack.

Democratic Origins and Revolutionary Writers, 1776-1820: Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
Index Henry David Thoreau, of French and Scottish descent, was born in Concord and made it his permanent home. From a poor family, like Emerson , he worked his way through Harvard. Throughout his life, he reduced his needs to the simplest level and managed to live on very little money, thus maintaining his independence. In essence, he made living his career. A nonconformist, he attempted to live his life at all times according to his rigorous principles. This attempt was the subject of many of his writings. Thoreau's masterpiece, Walden , or Life in the Woods (1854), is the result of two years, two months, and two days (from 1845 to 1847) he spent living in a cabin he built at Walden Pond on property owned by Emerson. In Walden , Thoreau consciously shapes this time into one year, and the book is carefully constructed so the seasons are subtly evoked in order. The book also is organized so that the simplest earthly concerns come first (in the section called "Economy," he describes the expenses of building a cabin); by the ending, the book has progressed to meditations on the stars.

    Issues and Themes
Though Thoreau was not really recognized in his own time, he is known today as the most challenging major American author. He is also known as a transcendentalist along with other great writers, such as Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. His style of prose is exhibited in such works as The Maine Woods , "Resistance to Civil Government," and Walden . These pieces of literature focus on the importance of nature and individualism . Thoreau tried to convey the idea to live life, not just walk through it. He wanted people to reevaluate their lives and see what was really important.

About this website (Sept. 2005) : This website is 2 years old, has 300 pages, and gets about 20,000 page visits a day . Its main function is to show that the most simple solution for describing physical reality, the Wave Structure of Matter (WSM) in Space, does actually work (the problems have been caused by the 'Particle' conception of matter in 'Space-Time', as Einstein realised). Now we realise that most people are not into physics, philosophy or metaphysics. However, most people do care about the world that we live in, and the future world that we are creating for our children. And it is pretty obvious that truth and reality (those much abused terms) are the two most important subjects for Humanity to understand if we are to build a better world. Our aim is to get these various WSM subject pages in the top ten in Google so that this knowledge of the Wave Structure of Matter (WSM) is at least known and considered. To achieve this we really need your help to add links to this website . If we can convince just 1% of people (100 people a day) to donate 5 minutes of their time to help then we will easily succeed in achieving this over the next year or so (as most of our pages currently rank in the top 50 in Google for relevant search terms).

Best known as one of the first proponents of American Transcendentalism, Henry David Thoreau was also one of the first American naturalists and eco-literature writers. He was the third child of John Thoreau and Cynthia Dunbar and spent most of his life in and around Concord, Massachusetts. His father operated a pencil manufacturing business in the area. Thoreau attended Concord Academy and graduated from Harvard College in 1837. The next year he and his brother John opened an innovative school, which operated until 1841. Afterward, Thoreau worked as a tutor, handyman, carpenter, surveyor, essayist, and speaker. At the outbreak of the Mexican War, Thoreau protested slavery by refusing to pay his poll tax and was jailed for one night. His essay "Resistance to Civil Government" was written as a response to that event. During his life, he was an outspoken abolitionist and wrote a number of popular antislavery tracts. His books

    HENRY DAVID THOREAU
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." W ith these words Henry David Thoreau declared the purpose of his Walden experiment, the two years he spent in the Concord woods testing his belief in the ability of man to transcend his senses and attain a higher understanding of life. By the shores of Walden Pond where Thoreau lived from the land, he meditated, wrote poetry, and developed a philosophy of pacifism and a reverence for all living things that profoundly influenced 19th and 20th century thought. A rendering of Thoreau's cabin as it stood by Walden Pond from 1845-1847. Concord-born poet, philosopher, naturalist, essayist and educator, Thoreau represents one of the most authentic and individualist voices in all American thought. "No truer American ever lived," wrote Emerson of his friend. Thoreau was graduated from Harvard in 1837 and returned to his hometown in search of an occupation. Befriended by Emerson, who appreciated his purity and originality of thought and deed, Thoreau gave his first lecture before the Concord Lyceum in 1838, embarked with his brother John in 1839 on his first fluvial excursion along the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, gathering material for his later book, and published poetry and essayis in THE DIAL in 1840-1842.
