James Thomson
James Thomson, author of "The Seasons" and "Rule Britannia", was born on 11 September 1700 at Ednam (Roxburghshire), where his father was parish minister. An obelisk on Ferney Hill commemorates the poet, who was brought up in the neighbouring parish of Southdean. He studied divinity at Edinburgh University, but left early and went to London to pursue a career as a dramatist; it was as this that he was best known in his lifetime. His many plays include "Sophonisba" (1730) and "Tancred and Sigismunda" (1745). With David Malloch he wrote "The Masque of Alfred" (1740), which includes "Rule Britannia". The music was by Thomas Arne (1710-78). It is for "The Seasons" that Thomson's name is remembered. The poem's sections were first published independently: Winter (1726), Summer (1727), Spring (1728) and Autumn (1730). The complete poem was then published 1730, and it was revised by Thomson on several occasions. It remained popular for well over a century, and is said to have inspired Turner, Wordsworth and Coleridge. Josef Haydn (1732-1809) used a German translation as the text for his oratorio "Die Jahreszeiten" (1801). As late as the end of the nineteenth century it was still the sort of book which might be presented, in a nicely bound edition, as an improving end-of-year prize for a talented school pupil. But Thomson's reputation has diminished, and his style is now generally considered excessively florid and verbose. His other works include "Liberty" (1734-36) and "The Castle of Indolence" (1748).

Thomson, James
Northern Irish physicist and engineer who discovered 1849 that the melting point of ice decreases with pressure. He was also an authority on hydrodynamics and invented the vortex waterwheel 1850.
Thomson was born in Belfast, the brother of the future Lord Kelvin. At the age of only ten he began to attend Glasgow University, obtaining an MA in 1839. He held a succession of engineering posts before settling in Belfast in 1851 as a civil engineer. He was professor of civil engineering at Belfast 1857-73 and at Glasgow 1873-89.
The vortex water wheel was a smaller and more efficient turbine than those in use at the time, and it came into wide use. Thomson continued his investigations into whirling fluids, making improvements to pumps, fans, and turbines.
Thomson's discovery about the melting point of ice led him to an understanding of the way in which glaciers flow. He also carried out painstaking studies of the phase relationships of solids, liquids, and gases, and was involved in both geology and meteorology, producing scientific papers on currents and winds.

James Thomson THOMSON, JAMES, a celebrated poet, was born, September 11, 1700, at Ednam, near Kelso, of which parish his father was minister. Beatrix Trotter, the mother of the poet, was daughter and co-heiress of a small portion of land at Foggo in Berwickshire, and is described as having been a woman of "a singular fervour of imagination," at the same time that she shone in the domestic and social virtues. The difficulty with which his father supported his family, having nine children, occasioned his removal, in the early childhood of the poet, to the parish of Southdean, in the presbytery of Jedburgh, where the stipend, though not He was, nevertheless, prevailed upon to commence a course of study in Edinburgh. The lord chancellor soon after died, and, Thomson having neglected to apply for a renewal of his place, it was bestowed by the succeeding judge, lord Hardwicke, upon another. The poet was, therefore, reduced once more to a dependence on his talents for support. It is creditable to him, that, while in this painful situation, he showed, in his letters to a friend in Edinburgh, an affectionate anxiety to assist the narrow circumstances of his sisters, Jean and Elizabeth, who then lived with Mr Gusthart, one of the ministers of the city. He was introduced, about this time, by Mr (afterwards lord) Littleton, to the prince of Wales; and, being questioned as to the state of his affairs, he answered. "that they were in a more poetical posture than formerly:" which induced the prince to bestow upon him a pension of one hundred pounds a-year.
