Dr. Kaufman is an assistant professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology, Oncology. His research interests focus on hematopoietic and endothelial cell development from human and non-human primate embryonic stem (ES) cells. This research uses ES cells to understand the earliest stages of hematopoiesis. In vitro and in vivo models are used to elucidate both extracellular protein interactions and intracellular genetic regulation that impact these developmental pathways. ES cells offer a unique model to investigate basic developmental biology and may serve as a therapeutic cell source to replace or repair cells or tissues damaged by disease or other degenerative processes.

James Thomson
James Thomson was born in Edinburgh on the 10th September 1763, the son of impoverished parents who found the prospect of raising him beyond their means. At the age of four months he was sent to live with his maternal grandparents in Currie where his grandfather was the weaver on Mid Kinleith farm. At six he was sent to the village school, but, after he contracted small-pox, his grandmother was fearful of exposing him to further illness and he was kept at home and taught to read and write by his grandmother and aunt. He was given charge of his grandfather's cow and accompanied the animal each day to its grazing with a copy of the poems of Ramsay tucked under his arm. When he was thirteen he was apprenticed to his grandfather and mastered the techniques of weaving with such skill that it was not long before his grandfather's business which had been very much on the decline started to pick up. He also went back to school to resume his education, but although he read assiduously, he never really mastered the art of neat handwriting, preferring to pen verses to his friends when he should have been practising his orthographical skills. In addition to his weaving, James was sought after in the village for other services: he developed the skill of bleeder; knew how to kill a mart; was at times employed as a forester and on a Saturday evening could be found in the village inn where he trimmed the beards of the locals while they quaffed their ale. He also purchased a violin and learned to play it, entertaining his friends with his music as well as with his verse.

This page is devoted to James Thomson, a Scottish poet of the Victorian era. The James Thomson Poetry Works is really a web site in the middle of a web site and is a service of The Vasthead. This page began in February, 2000, when only a few Thomson poems could be seen on line. Most of the poems now available appeared here first.
James Thomson lived from 1834 to 1882 . The "B.V." after his name in the above quote is an abbreviation for Thomson's pseudonym. The letters are often used to distinguish him from another James Thomson (the author of "Rule Britannia") who lived from 1700 to 1748. Thomson is best known for his gothic epic, " The City of Dreadful Night ." Inspired by his own struggles in the city of London, the poem portends the horrors and decadence of modern urban life. It is not without reason that Thomson is sometimes called the "poet of doom." Thomson's short life can be loosely compared to Edgar Allan Poe. Like Poe, he suffered from a

Radical Renfrew takes the locality of Renfrewshire in the West of Scotland, and presents a literary excavation of the poetry of the period 1789-1914. The result challenges the view of nineteenth century West of Scotland poetry as being largely a desert in which a few "minor figures" bloomed. It asserts that people have been deprived of a whole literature of what they once held to be valid poetry, and the introduction to Radical Renfrew closely argues why and how this situation has come about.
Nearly 400 pages of poetry are brought back into print from the extensive archives of Paisley Central Library, the region's main repository. Besides known Renfrew poets such as John Davidson and James Thomson of Port Glasgow, over 60 other writers are featured, including the forgotten radical feminist Marion Bernstein and the pungent Chartist satirist Edward Polin.
A "guide to the location of some themes in the book" lists the themes as:
religion, alcohol, emigration, employment, unemployment, trade unions and co-operation, anti-ruling class, parliamentary representation, republican, feminist, soldiering and police, literature and reputation, town and city, nature and the country, astronomy and microscopy, and poetry using shape. A number of these themes list poems pro- and anti- the subject heading.

His most famous poem, The Seasons, The Seasons, Thomson's faithful, sensitive descriptions of external nature were a direct challenge to the urban and artificial school of Pope and influenced the forerunners of romanticism, such as Gray and Cowper. His other important poems are Liberty The Castle of Indolence (1748), written in imitation of Spenser and reflecting the poet's delight in idleness. Thomson also wrote a series of tragedies along classical lines, with a strong political flavor. The most notable were Sophonisba Edward and Eleanora (1739), which was banned for political reasons; and Tancred and Sigismunda (1745). In 1740 he collaborated with his friend David Mallet on a masque

He is remembered for his darkly pessimistic poem The City of Dreadful Night. He was raised in an orphan asylum and became (1851) an army teacher at Ballincollig, Ireland. In 1862 he was dismissed from the service for a very minor offense, became a clerk in London, and contributed (using the signature B.V.) to the National Reformer, the magazine of his friend Charles Bradlaugh. Thomson's life in London was lonely and impoverished, aggravated by insomnia, his own incredibly melancholic disposition, and periodic bouts with alcoholism. His greatest poetical work, The City of Dreadful Night (1880, first published in the National Reformer, Fraser's Magazine, 1869) is an example of his lyric gift. Vane's Story (1880) and A Voice from the Nile (1884) are later collections of his poems. Thomson also wrote many essays and criticisms. His collected poems appeared in 1895 and a volume of prose in 1896.

Scientist and scientific administrator. James Allan Thomson was born at Dunedin on 29 July 1881. His father, the Hon. Geo. M. Thomson, was a noted naturalist and later a member of the Legislative Council; his mother, Emma, n©e Allan, was the eldest daughter of the Allan family of Hopehill, East Taieri. Allan Thomson was educated at Kaikorai School and at Otago University, where he was elected the first Rhodes Scholar for New Zealand. Four years were spent at Oxford University and two as a petrologist in the goldfields of Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia. In 1911 he joined the New Zealand Geological Survey as Palaeontologist, and three years later became Director of the Dominion Museum. He made a particular study of Tertiary and Recent sea shells called brachiopods, and his textbook Brachiopod Morphology and Genera, Tertiary and Recent is still in demand today, a rare achievement, for textbooks are usually soon outdated by further research. Thomson is also much respected for the most valuable contributions he made to New Zealand Tertiary stratigraphy – to the problem, that is, of determining the order in which the younger sedimentary rock strata were deposited, of how they might be grouped and named, and of how, too, they could be compared in their ages with the strata of other lands. Although amended and elaborated, his scheme of classification is still in use today. In addition, he continued an active interest in petrology and general geology. Thomson was an innovator in other respects: he helped to establish the present Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and founded the
