Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

Civil War Poetry
Civil War poetry melds the essence of literature and history in one. By reading the poems and understanding the historic context, the readers could explore the vast wealth of the American culture of the middle 19th century. The outcome of this last romantic war defines us as what we were, what we are and what we will be. We will examine some samples of these fine poems.
On December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union and then, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas followed. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., born in Cambridge, MA, graduated from Harvard at age 20, became famous for his poem "Old Ironsides" at the tender age of 21. Not only was he a poet, he was also a physician and Harvard professor. His son, who bore the same name, was just as famous. Junior also attended Harvard, fought in the Civil War, and was later appointed Mass. Supreme Court Chief Justice, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
The poem was written on March 25, 1861. The mood was very conciliatory. No anger and blame was reflected and only longing for the return of the Allegoric prodigal sister. The prediction of the outcome of the war and the ultimate return of the sisters were unkeenly accurate.

Green laceleaf, threadleaf, or cutleaf weeping Japanese maple ( Acer palmatum dissectum 'Viridis') matures to a naturally formal mounded cascading weeper. It can be pruned for a "mushroom cap" appearance, or left unpruned so that its branches weep clear to the ground.
It likes moist well-draining soil, never too wet. It needs at least a little bit of afternoon shade or its delicately lacy leaves will be burned. Varieties with wider leaf-types would be more apt to be tolerant of full sun though young Japanese maples are in essence semi-shade trees.
Mulching is useful to help keep the fibrous root system moist in summer. It can be grown in zones 6 through 8, but becomes delicate in zones with warmer summers.
It has red-highlighted orange-gold autumn colors, holding its wondrously colorful leaves long into autumn. These colors are very distinct from the autumn crimsons of purple-leaf maples, so 'Viridis' can be a marvelous contrast-companion with something like its red twin 'Crimson Queen.' Their leaves will provide startling contrasts spring through autumn.

Eventually we found Cerinthe major var purpurascens
The close-up photo at top of the page is from early May (2004) but could as easily have been taken just about any time up through September. The picture captures a tendency for the blue-green leaves behind the purple bracts to take on purple hues as they age. The second photo is from the following April (2005).
can succeed as a perennial.
In the case of our original specimen, it had to come back a second year to be really splendid, but we have since discovered that grown from seeds it looks very nice even its first year. If an individual plant does not last for many years, this hardly matters, because it self-seeds willfully.
The species, however, is not really new to gardening, since John Gerard's sixteenth century Herbal notes that it was grown for the pleasure of sipping the honey from the flowers. Yet it afterward vanished from English gardens. It was ignored for a couple of centuries, probably because it provided insufficient rewards. It was perhaps a bit too ordinary-looking until the variety "Purpurescens" turned up, which was so improved for looks that the species was bound to make a come-back.
Though native of the Mediterranean, they do survive in zones with cooler temperatures, where winters get down to zero degrees. They persist through winter in our zone, but will die back in cooler zones. Even if an initial clump fails to perennialize, with a little luck it will have self-seeded before it experiences winter death.
