Francis Thompson When Thompson couldn't complete medical school he moved to London. Things went poorly for him in London as he lived for several years as a tramp. Poverty and opium addiction were his lot. Then a magazine editor rescued him. The following is the opening lines of a poem by Thompson. I urge you to read the entire poem when you have the opportunity. The Hound of Heaven I fled Him, down the nights and down the days; I fled Him, down the arches of the years; I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears I hid from Him, and under running laughter. Up vistaed hopes I sped; And shot, precipitated, Adown Titanic glooms of chasmed fears, From those strong Feet that followed, followed after. But with unhurrying chase, And unperturbed pace, Deliberate speed, majestic instancy, They beat-and a Voice beat More instant than the Feet- "All things betray thee, who betrayest Me." I pleaded, outlaw-wise, By many a hearted casement, curtained red, Trellised with intertwining charities (For, though I knew His love Who followed

The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory
Broadview, 1999, 1492 pp., ISBN 1-55111-100-4, $35.95
Description:
The Broadview Anthology of Victorian Poetry and Poetic Theory is the most comprehensive collection of poetry from the period ever published. Included are generous selections from the work of all major poets, and a representation of the work of virtually every poet of significance, from Thomas Ashe at the beginning of the era to Charlotte Mew at its end. The work of Victorian women poets features very prominently, with extensive selections not only of the work of canonical poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti, but also of that of poets such as Augusta Webster for which high claims have recently been made by critics. The anthology reflects (and will contributed to) the ongoing reassessment of the canon that is central to English Studies today; in all sixty-six poets are represented. The editors have included complete works wherever feasible including the complete texts of Tennyson's In Memoriam and of a number of other long poems. A headnote by the editors introduces the work of each poet, and each selection has been newly annotated.

Francis Thompson was born in Preston in 1864 but moved to live with his family in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1864. Raised as a Roman Catholic and educated at home, in 1870 he went into Ushaw College to train for the priesthood. However, his tutors found him to be temperamentally unsuited and he left to study for a degree in Medicine in Manchester's Owens College (later to become the University of Manchester). In the event, he did not complete the course and was thrown out by his father.
He then moved to live in London where he would probably have ended his short life as a drug addict were it not for the intervention of Wilfred and Alice Meynall, publishers of the Merrie England magazine, who, recognising the quality of his writings, took him in, nursed him back to health and became his major promoters and benefactors throughout the remainder of his life.
